Sakari Momoi, world’s oldest man, passes away at 112

Sakari Momoi, who held the title for world’s oldest man, has died in Tokyo, Japan. He was 112.

The Japanese supercentenarian, who received recognition by Guinness World Records in last August, was a former high school principal, passed away due to kidney failure in a care facility on Sunday, the BBC reported.

The former high school principal and father of five, Momoi was born in 1903 and enjoyed reading, especially Chinese poetry, and travelling around Japan with his late wife, according to Guinness.

At the time of receiving his certificate from Guinness, he had said that he “wanted to live for about two more years.”

Though it hasn’t been announced who would take Momoi’s title now, it could be 112-year-old Japanese man Yasutaro Koide, who was born a month after Mr Momoi, according to reports.

According to Guinness, the oldest person to have ever lived was Jeanne Calment of France, who lived 122 years and 164 days, and dies in August 1997.
