Container homes- alternative minimalist and affordable housing?
One of the most sought after but harder to get commodities at the moment in Seychelles is accommodation. It is not easy to find affordable housing but Mr. Richard Ernestine may have a solution in the form of container homes.
Based at Union Roofing in Providence Mr Ernestine told TODAY that the idea to venture into such a business started years ago, however, it only became a reality last year. Since Seychelles has a real need for housing, this will certainly be an alternative for lower earners or for people who just want to lead a minimalist life.
The units sold are organised like an open plan bedsitter, however, Mr. Ernestine says, they can be altered to the buyers' tastes and needs. So if the idea of seeing your cook top, shower and toilet immediately upon waking up doesn't sit well with you, you can ask to have walls installed to separate the area. However, walls and everything else not originally included in the quote will naturally raise the price of the unit.
The price for a basic unit is only SR90,000 and this includes transportation to the site, a shower, toilet, wash basin, cooker, kitchen sink, electrical, light fittings, a door and windows. The container comes in a flat pack which is then transported by pickup truck and installed and furnished on site on stumps or a slab. Mr. Ernestine says that as for any regular building the prospective home owner needs to secure building approval from the Seychelles Planning Authority but that no special permit is needed. In fact it is a similar process to obtaining permit to build a prefabricated house.
The cost alone may attract individuals who have been searching for homes for a while. However, this may not be the best option if you have children.
Additionally, since a bedsitter is not generally a house size that is popular with Seychellois house hunters, perhaps you might be interested to know that it is also possible to stack containers on top of each other to enlarge the living area. Although only three containers can be stacked at a time it is also possible to stack them side by side or in other creative ways for more visual interest.
The current high temperatures in the country might deter prospective buyers from purchasing one of the container homes, however, Mr. Ernestine says that the units are not hot at all, they are well insulated and also come with an extractor fan in the bathroom. However, depending on the heat tolerance of individuals some may prefer to install an air conditioning unit but the businessman says that the current occupant in an existing unit only uses a fan and seems fine.
If you wish to purchase one of those units you will need to get into contact with Mr. Ernestine at Union Roofing who says that they only take orders on demand, once the order is put in and you have all the necessary papers it can take up to three months until you are enjoying your new home. If you prefer to use the units as an office, this can also be arranged. However, you may want to visit the site of a current home to ensure that minimalist style living is for you since it is not a very big living area.
So if you have a piece of land, cannot afford to take out a very large loan and do not mind living in a very small area this may suit you. Young people who also want to have a taste of what it is like to live independently but do not want to be shocked by unforeseen expenses may also want to choose this as an option for their first home.
Would you live in a container home?
