Rest in Peace Sir.James Mancham, founding President of the Republic of Seychelles. I have been honoured to have met him and spoken to him a couple of times, always mentioning that my grandfather Gustave de Comarmond (Senior) was a great man. He was a distinguised and charismatic son of Seychelles, great orator and writer, man of peace and reconciliation, firm supporter of the environment and natural riches and well-being of our country. Over the years I have received several congratulatory letters from him on my professional appointments. He will be forever engraved in our history.Rest in peace Sir!

The President of the Republic regrets to announce the passing of founding President Sir James Richard Mancham, who passed away peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Glacis this morning.

President Sir James Mancham, the founding President of the Republic of Seychelles, was a true patriot, a veteran politician, and a committed advocate of national reconciliation. He was a defender of liberty and champion of human rights. “The world has lost a global apostle of peace, understanding, and unity. Seychelles has lost a true patriot,” said President Faure. “His dreams for a more united, peaceful Seychelles where there is true reconciliation, needs to be fulfilled by all of us here today.”

As a sign of respect to the former Head of State, the national flag will fly at half-mast until President Mancham’s funeral. On behalf of the government, the people of Seychelles, and his family, President Faure extends his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Sir James Mancham.

It is with great sadness that the Project reports the passing over of Sir James Richard Mancham, first President of the Republic of Seychelles.

Mr. Mancham was the strongest advocate of reconciliation, and paid the ultimate political price twice for his belief and commitment to the cause.

It is a great loss to the country, and the project calls upon the authorities to recognise this with an official period of mourning.

May you rest in Peace Sir James.

Seychelles’ founding president Sir James Richard Mancham has died aged 77.
The news was announced officially on national television by President Danny Faure.
Mancham spent only a year in office before being ousted in a coup by his prime minister, France-Albert René, while he was attending a Commonwealth conference in London.
After his ouster, Mancham was forced into exile until 1993, when multi-party democracy was restored in the country. Twice he contested for the presidency in 1993 and 1998 but lost to René.
An indefinite period of official mourning has been declared on the island until his remains will be laid to rest.
Except for the occasional letter to the editor, Sir James had essentially been retired from political life for several years.

Death of Seychelles’ Founding President James Mancham

Former President James A. Michel has expressed his deepest sorrow and regret on the passing away of the Founding President of the Republic of Seychelles, Sir James R. Mancham.
In a letter to his wife, Lady Catherine Olsen Mancham, Mr Michel said that he was shocked by the loss of his friend, saying that while words alone will not assuage the grief and sense of loss felt by Lady Mancham and her family, Mr Michel and his family are united with the Mancham family in their great bereavement, where they may find comfort and solace in the memories that they all have of ‘Jimmy’.
“Jimmy was a world statesman, a philosopher, a writer and a poet whose commitment and tireless contribution to the promotion of world peace, progress and reconciliation found resonance on the international scene and in Seychelles. He was a pillar of the contemporary history of Seychelles and a central figure of our return to multi-party democracy. He was a true apostle of peace, national unity and reconciliation, and his achievements, vision and endeavours in that sense will remain his enduring legacy. I shared his principles and was proud to call him a friend and to avail myself of his wise counsel. We shall always remember Jimmy for the contribution he made to our country, for the patriot that he was – a man of uncompromising principles and conviction, the Founding President of the Republic of Seychelles who shall continue to inspire us and many generations of Seychellois to come. We owe Jimmy a lot and we shall always be grateful to him.”
President Michel said that he joins the Seychellois nation in offering his deepest sympathy to Lady Mancham and the Mancham family and offers his unconditional support as they mourn the passing of Sir James.
“I pray that you find the strength and courage to overcome your great loss. May Jimmy’s soul rest in peace.”

Sir James Mancham Avenue / Road???
Renaming 5th June Avenue to Sir James Mancham Avenue
The Honorable Leader of the Opposition, Father Wavel Ramkalawan has made fitting proposal in renaming 5th June Avenue to Sir James Mancham Avenue, it is a fitting recognition to set right the treachery act against the man and Seychelles!

Paul B Chow For me he deserves nothing less than the airport being named after him. When he was calling on the colonial government to build the airport in order to spearhead development to remove poverty, Albert Rene publicly opposed it on the ground it would provide the Americans with a base!! He went to lobby MPs in London at his own expense. When the first jet landed he was the first passenger to disembark - he paid his own airfare even though he was then Chief Minister. It is a mark of his achievements, a politician who delivered even if he did not have power.

David Scholastique I think Sir James should be remembered. And naming the Airport after him like Paul said, will be a great way to remember him. If I am not mistaken, it was him who started to bring tourist to Seychelles and started to build the tourism industry..I performed at many of his government's functions at that time, mostly at CLUB 52. Pirate's Arms Hotel, Victoria.

Whatever the case may be, for or against Sir James Mancham, the fact remains that he was the founding father of our republic and this will be remembered and acknowledged in our history books. The manner in which he may have conducted his politics on arrival back from exile to the dissatisfaction of many remains debatable by each side. Nevertheless throughout it all he never promulgated vengeance or retribution, on the contrary he lived up to philosophy of the Paloma Blanca!

Pas Baton Correction: His back was against the wall. It's not that he didn't want those who overthrew him punished, there's NOTHING HE COULD'VE DONE about it. If he dared try, FAR and his regime would've shown him whose boss. So, he had to suck it up and for the small concession of getting some of his land and worldly goods back, his silence was bought. He HAD NO CHOICE but to keep his gob shut. How else, would he have been able to live here?

9 AM UK the first news via Facebook of Sir James Mancham former first Sechelles Seychelles President death Empty Traffic arrangements for Sir James’ funeral tomorrow

Post  Sirop14 Wed Jan 11, 2017 2:56 pm

Traffic arrangements for Sir James’ funeral tomorrow

11-January-2017
The police have given details of traffic arrangements for the funeral of Seychelles’ founding President James Mancham which will be held tomorrow.
Inspector Antoine Desnousse of the Police Traffic Section said that as from 8.30am the body of the late former president will be moved via Plaisance from Padayachy mortuary at Mont Fleuri to the Palais des Sports.
Henceforth traffic officers will divert vehicles towards St Therese road while the funeral procession is making its way along Mont Fleuri-Plaisance road.
As soon as the cortege reaches the Plaisance roundabout heading towards St. Therese Road, all transport in this area will have to stop and give way to the procession.
Inspector Desnousse said when the procession is fully on St Therese Road, motorists going to Mont Fleuri will resume their journey. However drivers will not be allowed onto St Therese Road at that point.
Traffic along the Bois de Rose Avenue and Providence Highway will also have to halt at the Roche Caïman roundabout in order to ease the procession’s arrival at the Palais des Sports.
Once the procession enters Palais des Sports traffic will revert to normal until noon when the body of Sir James will be transported from Roche Caïman to State House.
At this point the police will close the Bois de Rose Avenue and Francis Rachel Street completely hence drivers going either to town or to the south will have to use the Mont Fleuri and Bel Eau roads.
In addition traffic officers will be posted at the Clock Tower to ensure a smooth funeral procession. All roads will reopen once the procession reaches its destination.
A little before 2pm the body of Sir James will once more be displaced for the funeral mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and as a result the following roads will be closed for brief periods: part of Albert Street up to the traffic lights, Revolution Avenue, Quincy Street and Olivier Maradan Street.
All the roads mentioned will reopen during the funeral service with the exception of Church Street and Olivier Maradan Street which will work only as a one lane street because the other lane nearer the church will be used as the designated parking slot for VIP vehicles.
When the funeral procession will make its final journey to State House the police will close down the following roads: Palm Street, a section of 5th June Avenue, Manglier Street, and Independence Avenue.
Inspector Desnousse is urging businesses and other drivers to make sure their vehicles are not parked on the road or exiting onto the road during the processions.
It is important to note that Victoria Gymnasium, Victoria House and Freedom Square car parks will also be closed on funeral day and will only reopen once everything is over.
Drivers are advised to park in other areas such as the ex-playground which has ample space.
Shuttle buses will be made available from the bus station in Victoria for those who wish to pay their last respect to the late President at the Palais des Sports
The police have appealed to all road users for their cooperation tomorrow as we honour the departure of Seychelles’ first President.

Mon hommage au Président Mancham

12-January-2017

Shirin Mancham Thank you for the stories. They are the sweetest memories. Eddie, my father cherished every moment with your dad. Mr. Ah-Moye. I love hearing from you. Mom speaks highly of you and does miss those golden days and all the friendships she made. Thank you Brigitte for the kind words.

Mitchel J Edmond Dr Ah-Moye good evening, we had a super/great and now very famous Salzburg University psychologist beside his colleagues - we/they tried to help rework very many of our Seychelles colonial debacles impacting life -unlike today the thousands of refugees/exile in /Austria - my exwife family just could not comprehend everybody was going there for holiday and here we had run away. In Seychelles then was told bluntly you shut up and not talk of share, what you know. Even the Superintendent James Pillay- we have come across some great doctors in Austria their ethics. Those who knew Seychelles was going "to go pear shape". At time of leaving Seychelles knew more about a coconut cracking your skull, a rip breadfruit falling on your head. The Austrian Illuminati are very very different to the British then 1976 - the Austrian, French and British pears are very different too. For the past 3 weeks refused to listen to any other radio station 24 hrs safe Salzburg Radio - they have not changes much since 1977 - for this historic national event listened to Radio Seychelles today .

Mitchel J Edmond Not wishing to be rude -the Salzburg Festivals is world renown and many of those attending knew of Seychelles and then President Mancham and global situation -Salzburg news paper is of excellent standard - please excuse the girl in the photo, we began learning /studying coming to grip about para-science in salzburg too. ( All the forcast and suddely there is snow every where) and Sir James have been laid to rest at State House -Tonight as Sir James is resting in the state House garden we would like to add a picture of Salzburg -the many impute my person have made in its economy and other development since 1977 one must be able to do these - the world , the USA, Britain is facing a massive undercurrent on account of Salzburg. My better half who knew Billy and Frank very well worked in the Osterricher Hof - the building behind that girl, Lady Tacther, Saddat, Jimmy Carter and many others stayed there - not your Pirate Arms

Mitchel J Edmond On a lighter note -still the gravity of the situation - Sir James philosophical approach tonight as he rest in the State House garden the writing of that song "Bake Yaya" meaning/impacted by our Seychelles EU Community coat of Arms/heraldic project the other side of the old Bel Air road the ladies who did their laundry in our school days. As children we were really concern the stories of those who can make children disappear and then eat them, they worked on that road.

Letter to the Editor - Remembering Sir James Mancham

16-January-2017
I was awoken last Sunday morning , January 8, 2017 to learn of the sad news of the passing of Seychelles’ founding President James R. Mancham.
Stunned by his sudden death, memories of Sir James came flooding back to my mind.
I have interviewed him on many occasions as a reporter working for the « Nation » under his presidential mandate.
My recollection of Sir James Mancham will always remain in my mind especially the song he loved to sing at all his political rallies : ‘La Paloma Blanca’ in which part of the lyrics goes as follows :
« I'm just a bird in the sky, no one can take my freedom away », indeed it expressed a period of time when everything seemed possible.
He played an important role in many political aspects of the Seychelles. He urged the British to put the Seychelles on the world map. Until the 70s Seychelles was unknown to the world.
He promoted tourism in the Seychelles, and planned the building of the international airport to facilitate access to the islands. Other projects like the east coast road were also on the list.
He was a jolly good fellow, generous and a kind-hearted man. One thing he had in mind was to gain the love and admiration of the Seychellois people.
He preached for peace and unity, quoting Mickey Mancham's song :
«Annou viv konman frer, nou pa pou lager».
Although he was highly criticised for his lifestyle, «la joie de vivre» prevailed in the Seychelles. In all his speeches, he always emphasised : «la joie de vivre in the Seychelles». Now that I live abroad, I am convinced that «la joie de vivre» really existed during his reign pre- and post-independence until he was ousted in the coup d'état.
It is true that life at that time was peaceful, carefree, pleasant and happy go lucky !
I wish to extend my sincere condolences to his widow, Lady Catherine and his sons, Richard and Alexander and daughter, Caroline.
May his soul rest in peace.

Nation bids farewell to Sir ‘Jimmy’ Mancham
Hundreds of people of all ages turned up at the Palais des Sports where the body of Sir James Mancham lay in state yesterday morning, to pay their final respects to the first President of Seychelles, Sir James Mancham.
by J. Figaro
It was indeed a very sad and sombre day yesterday, as the entire Seychellois nation came together to mourn the loss of the great man who was at the forefront of our march to independence. Family, friends and acquaintances as well as those who had not known him
personally all assembled, many clad in the dark attire traditionally
associated with funerals.

Cemeteries of Seychelles
A looming national crisis
With the increasing number of registered deaths per annum and the shortage of new burial plots, TODAY presented the relevant authorities with a scenario in which a deadly disease (similar to Ebola) claimed the lives of hundreds of citizens within several weeks asking how they would handle the bodies. Would the dead be buried or cremated?...

The main conference room at M3 Communications Group, Inc. in Sofia has been officially named "Sir James Mancham".

Founding Seychelles President, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 77 liked very much to sit in this very room room, to meet the staff and guests, to discuss important issues of the modern international policy…

In that very room last year he received officially the award "M3 Ambassador" and his office in Victoria acknowledged this in a special international press release.

There is also inside the room a corner with all Sir James' books, pictures from his numerous visits to Bulgaria, quotes from him and his poems about proud people and country of Seychelles also.

Now Sir James every day will be with us, as he is deeply in our hearts since the first time we met him back in 2003...
