In order to better manage its responsibilities and objectives, the Seychelles Bankers Association (SBA) has formalised the creation of the position of chief executive (CEO) and has appointed Norman Weber to the post with effect from 1 March 1, 2017.

Mr Weber, a Seychellois, is a UK Chartered Certified Accountant, and holds the postgraduate degree of MSc (Finance) from the London School of Economics, University of London.

Mr Weber was first employed in the accounting firm of Michael Angus, Pool and Co in 1976, before taking up employment in the Ministry of Finance from 1980 to 1998 variously as Chief Accountant Treasury, Director Budget & Planning, and as Principal Secretary. He was Governor of the Central Bank of Seychelles from 1999 to 2001 before moving to the private sector. Having successfully set up, financed and managed investment projects both in Seychelles and in South Africa, Mr Weber brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the finance and banking sector in Seychelles.

The new CEO’s main duties and responsibilities will be to further the broad objectives of the SBA which are, inter alia –
The fostering of a strong and effective working relationship with the Central Bank of Seychelles;
The development and protection of the interest and professional rights of SBA members;
The analysis of problems and the formulation of solutions with respect to the business of banking;
The promotion and establishment of orderly conditions in banking transactions;
The support of the interests of members in relations with public and government bodies, private institutions and the general public;
The research and analysis of questions affecting the science of finance and banking in general and in Seychelles in particular.

Among the first tasks of the new CEO will be to update the legal framework for the Association to set up a permanent office and premises for the Seychelles Bankers Association.

The Seychelles Bankers Association is a formal non-government association of licenced commercial banks (Al Salaam Bank, Bank Al Habib, Bank of Baroda, Bank of Ceylon, Barclays Bank, Habib Bank, MCB and Nouvobanq), as well as the Development Bank of Seychelles and the Seychelles Credit Union.
