New civil society organisation for Seychelles

11-November-2017
A new civil society organisation called simply Seychelles Civil Society (SCS)is being registered.

A spokesman for the organisation, Barry Laine, says there is a need to create “a powerful force to represent civil society in our everyday life as citizens of Seychelles”.

“Members of SCS may join as an individual or as an organisation because together we will be stronger, speak with one voice and put the people’s interests first,” says Mr Laine.

“We need committed people on board to reshape our social structure, realign wealth distribution, become more of a society-centred organisation and strive to overcome some of the following obstacles:
Wealth distribution – It is not right that we pay some civil servants and politicians such high salaries and they do not deliver while at the same time we pay R8,000 to our teachers and nurses who are doing a very important job in our society. It is not right that MNAs vote themselves a higher salary without debate.

Illegal land acquisition -- Land unfairly sold to senior members of the government and their families and concubines must be taken back and redistributed. We will ensure the new Land Tribunal is doing its job properly and not there to cover up illegal and dodgy land deals by the echelon.

Inheritance and bank reserve – In 1977 the British left us a good reserve in the bank, where has it gone? Money paid to overseas operators like the Irishmen of FIU and NDEA must be returned to us. After 40 years of one party rule we have a poverty rate of 40% which is a crying shame on our society. James Michel took great pride in telling us we are a high income country but who is enjoying a high income?

Clean drinking water – Again after 40 years of one party rule we are drinking desalinated water. PUC has had 40 years to build a couple of reservoirs and a good distribution of clean drinking water and clearly it has failed. Why can’t we have clean drinking water when every day clean water from our mountains run into the sea? We want to see a complete change of management at PUC because they cut people’s water supply without the user knowing, which is a human rights violation and our Ombudsman is powerless to do anything about it. Some people who are currently drinking desalinated water are perspiring excess salt in their sweat and does our Ministry of Health know about this?

Truth and Reconciliation – Seychelles Truth Reconciliation and Peace Platform (STRPP) have been working for two years and they have put together a set of proposals which was handed to our President and in the meantime three public meetings have been held and people are crying out for the process to start. In the marriage of convenience one side (PL) is waiting for the other side (LDS) to come up with a plan that will protect their friends, colleagues and families. STRPP is asking for the truth and the reconciliation to take place without dishing out punishments, how else can we do this delicate work?
Privatisation of SBC, STC, Nation and some parastatals – The Government is top heavy because it is trying to do too much and meddling in the private domain. An R8 billion budget to govern 90,000 people is too high, there must be a great deal of waste and duplication. We will seek to close down some of the parastatals, privatise SBC and Nation newspapers so we have a free press in Seychelles and allow the private sector to take over STC as long as it is not the current cartel of shopkeepers.

Improved consumer standards – Poor quality products are being sold in our shops, this is not acceptable and our agencies tasked to take care of standards have failed. We will seek improvements.

Health care – We cannot continue to live on donations. There are ways to raise finance for healthcare. We will strive to provide a salary range of R12,000 to R18,000 and our nurses and doctors will be better rewarded with a salary range of R30,00 to R40,000 because we will seek to reduce the salaries of government officials. People waiting for hours at the hospital to see someone is unacceptable and inefficient. We want change.

Education – How long have we been trying to get our education system right? Nolan’s report, Commonwealth’s report you name it someone has been engaged to tell us the best way to organise and run our education system and still we are in a mess. Teachers like nurses are important people in our society and yet we pay a PS in government R25,000 and a teacher R8,000. Teachers must earn a minimum of R12,000 if we want to retain good ones.

Law and Order – Our Judiciary and prison service leaves a great deal to be desired and so far not much improvement is being achieved. We need to allow overseas lawyers to practice in Seychelles so that a high standard can be achieved in our court system with such competition.

This is not a political manifesto. We need to bring back peace and harmony to our land and the civil society is at the centre of this struggle and we can do it. Join us and contribute positively in whatever way you can because this is our society, our life and our children’s future we want to put right.

We welcome the news from Mr Barry Lane to put in place a second civil society organisation - However like as the University Seychelles Project events. Two years ago at the high of President J A Michel crises, then Sir James Mancham we recommanded that they/those in Sechelles Seychelles put in place a second or another Umbrella Civil society - the reaction and respective position.

Airport roundabout creates traffic jam

09-December-2017

The newly registered Seychelles Civil Society (CSC) has called on the Seychelles Land Transport Agency (SLTA) to rethink their design of the roundabout at the airport.
The way they have designed it is creating a traffic jam during every evening rush hour which was not there before the roundabout was created.
It is not acceptable for anyone to queue for 15 minutes to navigate the roundabout.
In addition the roundabout island is too big unless someone plans to build a condominium inside the roundabout.
The size is unnecessary and it is not easy for 2 vehicles to manoeuvre side by side going round at the same time.
Secondly there should have been a flyover going north/south to take traffic going straight without the need to queue up and navigate round the roundabout.
A flyover would also provide a funnelling of the two lanes highway into single lanes by the petrol station.
My, oh my we know how to get things wrong!
Motorists are also asking why the extravagance of creating pink tiled sidewalks; surely this extra cost could have been saved and used elsewhere. May be we are expecting pink elephants to use the sidewalks.
The problem is there is insufficient consultations about our infrastructure; those who think they know it all are making blunders. Take a look at Victoria and it is plain to see that Francis Rachel street traffic routing is a mess and someone needs to rethink this layout.
At the airport we definitely need to build a flyover and get rid of this nightmare that has been created by this poorly designed roundabout.

PUC harbouring a silent killer

01-March-2018
The Seychelles Civil Society (SCS) is a legally constituted non-governmental organisation (NGO) and our aims and objectives are to highlight certain issues which affect our society as a whole and we also help those who are affected by the wrongs of the past and we try our best to get things put right. We seek Truth and Reconciliation and we try to serve our community by giving out information which have hitherto been kept quiet by the government as if we have no right to know. SCS is not shy to bring forth these wrongdoings and find ways to put them right. What we are about to tell you should have been made known to our society at large a long time ago by PUC and the government. They could have gone on SBC and explained that PUC harbours a silent killer and give our society the facts. Let the people know and let the people decide.
Electromagnetic Field (EMF) is the magnetic field created wherever there is electricity flowing in wires or from the TV screen or from the computer screen or even mobile phones when they are switched on. The spread of this magnetic field is known as radiation and there are literally hundreds of studies which have been carried out over the last 30 years which proves that high EMF radiation is harmful to the human body, and I mean very harmful. This is not new and yet in Seychelles we appear to be unperturbed about this silent killer in our midst. PUC owes the people who are its customers a duty of care to spell out all the dangers that its transmission system and equipment pose and do all in its power to minimise the risks its products present. Let’s go back to school. The Earth has a magnetic North Pole which is diametrically opposite the South Pole on the Earth’s axis of rotation. The human body has a magnetic field, it is a coloured emanation called aura. Today we can photograph the human body’s aura and Healers believe they can transfer their strong energy field into a weak person’s energy field using their hands and sometimes by hugging and healing takes place. When a baby cries the mother picks up the baby and engulfs the baby into her energy field and the baby stops crying. Anyway this is another subject which we can cover in another article.

Harmless and harmful electrical radiation

When electricity flows in the home or at work the voltage is single phase 240 volts and this does not present a danger to the human body. Some machinery need 400 volts and 3 phase to run and again we do not perceive there is any harmful radiation from these machinery. To distribute power across a whole country 240 or 400 volts will not do the job because the voltage drops the further you go along the line therefore electricity transmission companies like PUC have to transmit at very high voltages in order to reduce volts drop created by impedance and other technical issues. Therefore for long distance transmission PUC transmits at 11,000 volts (11KVA) and 33,000 volts (33KVA) where a kilovolt-ampere is 1,000 volts and uses transformers to step down the voltage to bring 240 volts into the homes and offices and 400 volts into factories far away from their generating station in Roche Caiman. Hundreds of studies over the years have shown that the radiation given out by these high power lines can cause serious harm to the human body and yet in Seychelles we seem to be unaware of these dangers or they are kept as a secret from our society. I know something about the subject because I served my apprenticeship with the Tanganyika (today called Tanzania) Power and Lighting Company from 1957 to 1960.
If you live within the distances published in the accompanying diagram transmitting at only 765,000 volts then you stand the risk of being seriously affected. Headaches leading to migraine is a common illness, the body’s immune system and DNA are adversely affected. According to some DNA experts high EMF radiation can cause mutation in body cells which produce fragmented DNA. The human brain which works on electrical impulses are also adversely affected leading to cognitive impairment and the risk of cancer increases sharply most common is Leukaemia and in some countries increase in degenerative nerve diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and many others have been recorded. Some studies have also shown that men living close to high power lines suffer with reduced sperm counts and cannot father a baby and some women have menstrual problems and find it difficult to enjoy an orgasm while some birth defects have been recorded. Based on the most current World Health Organisation guidelines, a healthy sperm count is 15 million per millilitre (ml) or at least 39 million per sample. A sperm count lower than 10 million per ml is considered abnormal and commonly associated with male infertility. There are so many court cases and a mountain of money has been spent paying lawyers to argue about something that is inarguable but that is how lawyers make their money.

Effects of high power distribution radiation on animals and plants

Plants and crops also suffer adversely due to proximity to high power lines. Root length is reduced, leaf area and weight is reduced, the overall biomass content and water content are affected and growth is reduced. The plant’s biochemical characteristics such as the production of chlorophyll are affected especially in vegetables. High power lines radiation can also affect animals and some reports claim up to 16.4% decrease in cow’s milk fat and pigs suffer with breathing difficulties and dogs suffer with lymph cancer and cats bear deformed kittens. In most developed countries high power lines are regarded as environmental pollution but how on earth can we have electricity distributed to all our homes which is what modern society want to have just like clean drinking water? We cannot have our cake and eat it as the saying goes. We need electricity because we have become dependent on it and modern society cannot exist without electricity.

Causal relationship

There are sufficient studies for our readers to research further and form their own opinion because this debate is contentious and huge sums of money have already been spent on lawyers who will argue till the cows come home because the more they argue the more money they make and we do not have to re-invent the wheel. It is now generally accepted that radiation from high power transmission of electricity lines cause harm to the human body, animals and plants if you happen to live in proximity of these lines. The causal relationship can no longer be denied. Avoidance is better than cure and at the end of the day PUC will defend its position because of the high cost of re-routing these high power lines and when they talk about disruption to the service come on in Seychelles we suffer at least 3 power cuts every month while PUC is upgrading the system. The good thing is PUC publishes on SBC radio and in the media when there will be “outages” (power cuts). Who will pay for the re-routing well PUC and in the end this cost is passed down to the consumers unless a grant can be obtained or a long-term loan is forthcoming.

Freedom of Speech. Reminiscent of ‘All Animals Are Equal. Some (Animals) Are More Equal Than Others’. Napoleon Humanised. In The Seychelles. Bully Personified. Dictatorship Personalised. The case. Many moons ago. Priest would exhort: ‘Do not do what I do. Do what I tell you’. At the peril of Hell Fire. Situation Revisited.
Freedom of Speech. Democratic Right. Slogans expressed. Fundamentals Honourable. When applied with RESPECT. Application on the ground disparate. One way traffic. Acceptable Concepts discarded. Divorced. From the norm.
Incidents show only disparity. Disparity self detrimental. In the not too long ago. Personages suffered massive character assassisnation. Near fatal blows. Accusations epithetical. Feelings trampled on. Disregard to their families. Unashamedly. In the name of Freedom of Speech. Freedom of Speech. In/With the Absence of RESPECT.
Others. Outside the Farm. Wanted to return the gifts. The Compliments. Wanted to invoke their Freedom of Speech. A perilous exercise. Eventually. They are dragged before the courts. To pay damages. ‘Deux poids. Deux mesures’. Democratic Rights. Freedom of Speech. Monopoly of One Group in The Seychelles. And one group ONLY.
One group of politicians would remark. In a normal democracy (trying to understand a normal democracy). This member should resign. That person should step down. Always from the other group(s). They are prisoners of another world. The Leader of the Opposition has been in Opposition. For THIRTY YEARS. And some. And A NORMAL DEMOCRACY DOES NOT APPLY!!
Parliamentarians were loud. Vociferous. Defending Seychellois rights. Land. Beaches. And more. Parliamentarians still there. Noises gone. Gone with the monsoons. The voices of Dissent. As Rivers in the Deserts.
Any new politics/politicians should learn. Learn from the unacceptable situations. From the midnight cries. Understand the causality. To find solutions. They should have a proper manifesto. Manifesto comprehensive. It should not try to bring the haves down. But to take the have nots up. Up the ladder. Gradual process.
Poverty is ‘Combatable’. With the Will. Resolve. Dedication. With the Proper Mindset.
Irony and Paradox. In Paradise. But Not The Death Of Paradise.

The people of Seychelles seek the Truth and Justice

23-May-2018
We are Seychelles Civil Society (SCS) an NGO specifically created to ensure our citizen’s rights are not violated and if they are violated then we will engage in the necessary actions for remedy. Tourists perceive Seychelles to be Paradise on Earth but to some of us it is Hell on Earth. Some people have lost their possessions, their family has been dispersed all over the world and now all they have left is a little dignity sufficient to find the truth. There are in the region of around 30,000 Seychellois and their descendants living overseas who were unlawfully dispersed because they did not agree with the Communist ideology 40 years ago and now the time has come for the truth to be told and for reconciliation to take its course and closure achieved. The victims do not seek revenge nor retribution, they want the truth told unadulterated and undisturbed by politicians and they will decide whether forgiveness is the answer. We are still reeling in our Marxist era indebtedness with approximately US $400 million of external debt and a R10 billion domestic debt accumulated by Treasury Bills issued by the government. We, the people of Seychelles, own our country and the debts which a political party creates has to be repaid by that political party, this is called Odious Debt.

Mr Ralph Hoareau address on the Truth Commission

Comment - Dear Mr Ralph Hoareau -we have listened to the recording. We also read the alternative Truth Commission article - his view of a Monument and that for the 40,000 diaspora which he label the 25 ,000 exile a Monument to the revolution/coup d'etat. Beside only one extra person on the National Truth Commission - Our own Blogs and forum contribution on behalf of that SIROP program. It takes resources and expertise and money to address such people and nation traumas and how it is done. Twice in Europe the mega exile/Refugees and migrant thematic which can cause the breakup of Europe if not a third world conflict and Seychelles is not isolated we are part of the mega situation - the Billions of Euro they have thrown at the issue to plug and find short term solution and the development in Italy Safe that Seychelles the need to get the due support from the UN and EU to help those 25,000 exiles and diaspora address this National Truth Commission - We are adding a link from the Angers diocese for those who believe, care to start their day in prayer and faith. ( In England the many Church with extra large spiders and they are populating to be very polite)

Letter to the Editor - Congratulations to ARID

10-November-2018
The festive season is around the corner and soon everybody will be shopping for gifts for their loved ones, planning a sumptuous Christmas dinner or getting the sexy outfit for the end of year party. Take a pause for a moment and think about those who have devoted their energy, effort, time and compassion towards others.
