Eco-Friendly Marathon
Seychelles’ 11th Eco-Friendly Marathon set for February 25, 2018.
by. D. Julie
Last year the event had over 4,000 participants both local and international. The marathon was well organised and there had been a minor setback because of the heavy rain that lasted over twenty minutes but the weather cleared out and the race began a little later than scheduled.
"If the rain had continued then we would have had to make a decision of who wanted to continue and who will pull out of the race. It would have been discouraging to cancel the race as there was participants that came a long way from home just so they could participate. Luckily everything went well and we are hoping that the weather will be perfect this year." said Miss Giovanna Rousseau.
The marathon is recognised internationally through the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) label and it attracts many eyes and will go on with their usual amount of distances for the different categories such as the 5km and 10 km races, the half- marathon (21 km) and marathon (42 km). Miss Giovanna mentioned that the event will have their usual helpers, sponsors and partners such as the government, Seychelles' Honorary Consul General for South Korea, Mr. Dong Chang Jeong , the Creative Industries and National Events Agency (CINEA), the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), Laxmanbhai, Airtel, Cable and Wireless, Creole Services, Hilton Hotel, Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Hotel, H Hotel, the ministry of Health, the Police Force and the Seychelles Cycling Association. The Seychelles Cycling Association normally plays a big role in the safety and guidance for the participants that come from abroad, and also watch for any upcoming vehicles that may pose a danger to the participants.
Prizes will be given to the winners of the 5 and 10k races at 12pm while the other continue their race. Later during the evening, prizes will be given to the winners of the half marathon and the marathon at Berjaya Bay Hotel 7pm during a 'cultural night' that will be hosted for the winners. Miss Giovanna revealed that their target will not be more than 5,000 participants and they have already ordered 4,800 t-shirts for the participants and officials. She stated that there are participants from different countries who have already registered online and “there is also a local company that has already registered 136 of its employees to take part of the race.”
Nick Baldwin, ranked 71 position in the Ironman World Ranking well known for his participation and outstanding performances will also be participating. "I want to increase my focus on running with the goal to win the Marathon." he said.
