Tanzanian prison officers arrive in Seychelles

30-August-2018

Security in local prisons is expected to be beefed up with the arrival, yesterday, of 33 prison officers from the Tanzanian Prison Service.

The support extended by the United Republic of Tanzania and the Tanzanian Prison Service to the Republic of Seychelles and the Seychelles Prison Service follows a request made earlier this year by President Danny Faure to his counterpart, President John Magufuli of the United Republic of Tanzania.

The arrival of the prison officers in Seychelles follows a statement made by Designated Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Macsuzy Mondon, at the Seychelles National Assembly in March this year.

On June 1, 2018, Raymond St. Ange, head of the Seychelles Prison Service, met his counterpart from the Tanzanian Prison Service, commissioner general Juma Malewa, in Dar es Salaam, to sign a memorandum of understanding between the two prison services. Training opportunities for Seychelles prison staff at the Tanzanian Prison Academy were also discussed.

“The arrival of seasoned prison wardens from the Tanzanian Prison Service is testament to our commitment to improving the security and service delivery of the Seychelles Prison Service, as announced at the start of the year. We are working hard to ensure our services continue to improve,” said the superintendent of Seychelles Prison Service, Mr St Ange.

The newly arrived prison wardens will be welcomed at the Seychelles prison headquarters at Montagne Posée where after completing an induction and discussion of Seychellois culture and history, will be introduced to general prison operations as the wardens take on their duty assignments.

In total 60 prison wardens were interviewed by the Seychelles Prison Service and 33 officers were selected.
