New Canadian HC looks to boosting trade and investment opportunities - 23.01.2013

The newly accredited Canadian high commissioner to Seychelles, Alexandre Levesque, has said his country hopes to boost trade and investment opportunities with Seychelles.

Mr Levesque presents his credentials to President Michel

Mr Levesque, 38, and based in Dar Es Salaam, presented his credentials to President James Michel at State House yesterday. He was later received by Vice-President Danny Faure.

Also present at the State House talks were the Minister for Foreign Affairs Jean-Paul Adam and the advisor and regional commercial delegate to the Canadian high commission David Werbiwski.

Mr Levesque, who is from the Quebec province and speaks fluent English and French, noted that Seychelles and Canada share common links of friendship as members of the Commonwealth and La Francophonie organisations.

He said issues discussed with President Michel, besides trade and investment, were the emergence of Seychelles in the oil and natural gas sector – an area, he said, Canada can be of considerable help, given its great experience in the field.

He also mentioned the significant Seychellois community settled in Canada, mainly in Montreal, Quebec.

He said this and other common factors binding Seychelles and Canada can be harnessed to increase prosperity of the two peoples.

The new Canadian high commissioner is due to call on the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly today.

Mr Levesque, who succeeds Robert Orr as Canadian high commissioner, has a solid background in foreign affairs and international trade.

He worked with the South East Asia Bureau, as well as the Commonwealth and United Nations Bureau, before his first foreign assignment in New York.

Mr Levesque has also served as Second Secretary, specialising in political and economic affairs at the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.

In Ottawa, he has worked in the Assignments Division, was Deputy Director in the South East Asia Division and later Director of the Central America and Caribbean Division.

Since 2010, he has been Director of the Assignments Division responsible for foreign affairs and international trade.

From his office in Dar-Es Salaam, Mr Levesque also covers Seychelles, the Comoros and Zambia.
