Minister Bastienne conducts first farm visits on Mahé
15-October-2018
The Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture, Charles Bastienne, has conducted his first visit on farms located on Mahé since he took over this portfolio during the Cabinet reshuffle in April earlier this year.
Minister Bastienne and his delegation visited five farms at Val D’Andorre, Baie Lazare on Friday and this follows a prior visit to a dozen farms on Praslin a week before.
The objective of his visit was to identify ways in which local farmers can further contribute towards the implementation of the newly launched comprehensive plan for agriculture.
Minister Bastienne stated that his visit was a way for him to note the farmers’ challenges and how they work in order to evaluate how the government can better assist them.
At Val D’Andorre, the minister encountered two major problems that were linked to lack of financing and a lack in viable markets for the farmer’s products.
Minister Bastienne started off by visiting the farms of Wilfred Magnam, Hendrick Herminie and Jackson Magnan who all three presently cultivate mostly cassava.
