Court of Appeal orders release of two Iranian sailors

20-December-2018

Two Iranian sailors from a group of 11 arrested in April 2016 for drug-related offences have been released by the Court of Appeal.

The group were arrested when their vessel was intercepted by the Seychelles Coast Guard and the then National Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDEA) seized around 97kg of drugs onboard.

Nine sailors from the group were later sent back to their country while the other two – the skipper and the vessel owner’s son ‒ were sentenced for two counts of life imprisonment for trafficking and importation of heroin and two counts of 20 years imprisonment for trafficking and importation of opium.

The two appealed their sentences and last week the judges of the Court of Appeal removed all the charges against them citing the fact that it has not been proven beyond reasonable doubt that the vessel was intercepted in Seychelles waters and the two offences committed there as well.

The two men are therefore free to go back to their country.
