United Seychelles condemns hate speech

22-March-2019
The United Seychelles party has deplored the rise of hate speech in the country and in particular posts made on social media forum ‘Seychelles Daily’ where a prominent user, Bernard Sullivan, states that “if we had the rights to kill I would definitely take a few lives with no regrets from the ones governing our country right now”.

In a communique released on Tuesday, United Seychelles writes:

“The latest use of violent language follows numerous racist posts by the same person that is completely at odds with the principles of equality that are enshrined in our Constitution.

“United Seychelles ardently defends the principles of free expression, but underlines that all threats of violence should not be tolerated by social media administrators or the media at large.

“United Seychelles is particularly concerned by the use of this rhetoric in the wake of the terrorist shootings that have taken place in New Zealand and which have led to tragic loss of lives of 49 persons.

“Our society has also taken note that threats of violence and reprisals were also used on the occasion of the funeral of former President France Albert René, where messages purportedly from the syndicate targeted people who attended the event.

“The Party has also received many messages from social media users who are appalled by the language used but are intimidated from reacting on social media itself for fear of reprisals.

“United Seychelles stands firm in condemning in the strongest possible terms any appeal to violence against any citizen as well as racist and discriminatory language.

“United Seychelles also calls on all authorities to reflect on the rise of incitement to violence and use of hate speech in our society and urges that consideration be given to addressing these issues through appropriate mechanisms, whether through the media itself or through appropriate legislation.

“The resolution condemning hate speech and violence was made following a meeting of the United Seychelles executive committee attended by the parliamentary caucus of the Party on Monday March 17.
