Boost in visitor arrivals from Russia and China

The Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) has announced that the hard work it has undertaken to develop the Russian and Chinese markets is beginning to pay off.

The local tourism board made the announcement after the release of official figures from the National Bureau of Statistics have shown that 2,425 out of the 18,539 visitors arriving in Seychelles during the first five weeks of the year up to the week ending Sunday February 2, 2014, were from Russia and a whopping 2,740 were from China.

According to the latest figures, there has been an increase of 30% in the number of visitors arriving from Russia when compared to 2013, whereas the Chinese market is the real testament to the numerous strategies the STB has put in place – with its 795% change when compared to the previous year.

According to the STB, winter time is the period where Seychelles generates more business from Russia and this is supported by special charters.

"It is encouraging to record such results and the January figures testify to the continuous marketing efforts deployed by STB and its partners over the years throughout the entire market," said STB representative for Russia and the Nordics, Karen Confait.

"The hard work and the investments that we have put in the world's fastest growing outbound tourism market is slowly but surely bearing fruit for Seychelles and we expect the numbers to keep increasing at a sustainable rate over the coming years,” said STB China manager Jean Luc Lai-Lam.

In addition to Seychelles’ participation in leading trade fairs held in China such as the China International Tourism (CITM) Mart held in Kunming, Yunnan, the STB has also hosted many members of the country’s press, who in turn helped increase Seychelles’ visibility as a holiday destination.

Another bold move during 2013 was the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, enabling visitors from China to easily use their credit cards while vacationing in Seychelles using Union Pay.

The agreement between the STB and Union Pay aims to help cooperation on matters of business development, conduct joint promotions, and improve the Seychelles travelling environment and experience with facilitated Chinese-friendly payment.

The board’s chief executive officer, Sherin Naiken also expressed satisfaction at Seychelles tourist arrival figures for this January.

"The January  2014 performance is the result of a strategic decision that was taken a few years ago  for Seychelles to venture into these emerging markets. It important at this point that we equally thank all the partners out there who believed in the potentials of these markets and whose support has been invaluable in developing those markets."

Boost in visitor arrivals from Russia and China Empty Tourism minister to bring ‘Seychelles is Ebola free’ message to China

Tourism minister to bring ‘Seychelles is Ebola free’ message to China

‘Seychelles is Ebola free’ is the message Tourism and Culture Minister Alain St Ange will be spreading during an official working trip to China, currently one of the fastest growing visitor source markets for the country’s tourism industry.

The size of the market has tripled since the beginning of 2014, and it is forecasted to continue to grow strongly for the remainder of the decade. With the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic in March 2014 in Guinea then spreading across land borders to Sierra Leone and other West African countries, reaching as far as Europe and America, Ebola fear is crippling Africa as a tourism destination and keeping tourists away. Geographically Seychelles is an African country, but located in the Indian Ocean.

The perception for potential Chinese travellers is that Seychelles is just part of a small Africa where the Ebola epidemic is not showing signs of slowing down. Ironically, it is not the epidemic of Ebola which is the problem it is a problem of geography that is today impacting on the African tourism industry.

Minister St Ange and Sherin Naiken, chief executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, will lead a tourism delegation on a working visit to China this weekend. The private sector interested in the Chinese tourism market will be joining the delegation travelling to China from November 8-14 to help better situate Seychelles in regards to the Ebola crisis.

“Seychelles has lost several tourist groups from China since the Ebola epidemic has been in the news, and yet Seychelles sits in the middle of the Indian Ocean, 1,000 miles off the east coast of Africa far, far away from the affected countries in West Africa,” said Minister St Ange.

Although there has not been a single case of Ebola reported in Seychelles, fear of Ebola and misconceptions of Chinese and world travellers on the geographical location of Seychelles is hurting the destination with cancellation of bookings. Minister St Ange said the pre-conceived perception Africa is ‘but a village’ is hurting Africa’s tourism Industry.

“Since the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic in Africa many tourism destinations have been feeling the adverse effects of cancellations because of the pre-conceived notion that ‘Africa is but a village’. Today, the economy of many African states is suffering. The time is right to set the record straight,” added Minister St Ange.

He noted that during this official working trip to China his message will be clear to key Chinese tour operators and the press: “Africa is a continent with 54 countries. We are not provinces and villages,” the minister said.
Since the outbreak of Ebola in some western African countries, the Seychelles Ministry of Health has been proactive and is present at the international airport to screen every arrival just as a protection. Although Seychelles has a visa free entry for visitors, the Ministry of Health has confirmed that visa requirements are being introduced for citizens from West African countries where Ebola is prevalent and this applies to anyone who has stopped in a country affected by the Ebola epidemic.
