Tourism minister continues visits to tourism businesses

17-April-2014

The Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St Ange has been continuing his 'door to door' visits to tourism businesses in the country.
Minister St Ange started this series of visits two weeks ago on the Grand Anse side of Praslin where he stopped at some 27 hotel properties.

On Tuesday next week he is scheduled to be back again on Praslin to continue his 'door to door' visits of hotels.

"This will go on until we have visited every establishment on the list of 117 hotels and guesthouses on Praslin and until we have sat down with the owners or managers of each establishment and heard directly from them what they see as challenges and also share with them what they feel they have achieved for themselves as their successes," Minister St Ange said.

These hotel visits is also an opportunity for Minister St Ange and his delegation to meet staff at these establishments and to see how satisfied they are in their job.

Last week Minister St Ange, who was accompanied by a delegation made up of tourism principal secretary Anne Lafortune, Jenifer Sinon from the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), Sinha Levkovic from the product management unit of the tourism department and Sandy Ally, personal assistant in the minister's office, continued his 'door to door' visits with calls on DMCs (destination management companies) and airline offices.

At the Emirates HQ the minister and his delegation were greeted by Oomar Ramtoola and Denise Rassool. Mr Ramtoola, the regional representative of Emirates, had flown to Seychelles especially for this meeting with Minister St Ange and his delegation.
After greeting every member of the Emirates staff, Minister St Ange and his delegation got the opportunity to hear from the management team of Emirates their views of the Seychelles tourism industry and the challenges they see.

"The meeting was frank, interesting and very important for the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. We heard of positive news that for the two coming months the Emirates flights to Seychelles were already fully booked. We also heard of the challenges faced by Emirates with Seychelles being the only station where the airline still cannot offer online check-in. We spoke about applicable costs as we did hear of staff conditions of employment. All in all the meeting was seen by both parties as a positive exercise for Seychelles tourism," Minister St Ange said.

Tourism minister continues visits to tourism businesses Empty Marketing Seychelles involves everyone

Post  Sirop14 Thu Oct 23, 2014 10:16 pm

Marketing Seychelles involves everyone

23-October-2014
Minister St Ange talking to the press yesterdayMarketing Seychelles involves everyone and not just the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) fighting to sell the country and the ministry pushing the policies behind.

“Tourism is not a hotel or a restaurant. It is the country. Seychelles incorporated is the product we are selling. We sell what we are, what we do, what we eat, what we enjoy. But we also sell our cleanliness, the safety label we say we are, we sell a hotel that people can come back to because they’ve enjoyed it so much,” Tourism and Culture Minister Alain St Ange told the media yesterday.

Minister St Ange, Home Affairs and Transport Minister Joël Morgan as well as Finance, Trade and Investment Minister Pierre Laporte have been tasked by President James Michel to put in place the Seychelles tourism marketing strategy aimed at redressing the projected 5% decline in visitor arrivals and 3% drop in earnings compared to last year. The marketing strategy will focus on key markets – Germany, France, China, India, South Africa and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – which have already been identified.

“This new approach has resulted in regular meetings and us proposing certain changes to government. We are also looking at the budget as the private sector has been screaming that we don’t put enough money in our budget to market Seychelles. The private spends much more money than the government to market Seychelles, They make it directly and the government also injects money in all the angles that keep our country going. This is why tourism is the pillar of our economy. We need to invest more and the call has been made in both the tri-partite committee and multi-sectorial meeting that is today sitting with the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Seychelles Hotel and Tourism Association, all technicians of government and most of the ministers under the chairmanship of Vice-President Danny Faure,” said Minister St Ange.

Tourism minister continues visits to tourism businesses Empty VP chairs fourth inter-ministerial tourism task force meeting

VP chairs fourth inter-ministerial tourism task force meeting

24-October-2014
The fourth Inter-Ministerial Tourism Task Force Meeting chaired by Vice-President Danny Faure took place last week at National House.

Present were the Minister for Home Affairs and Transport Joel Morgan, Minister for Land Use and Housing Christian Lionnet, special advisor to the Minister of Education Selby Dora and senior officials from the Ministry of Education, STB, SCAA, Air Seychelles, Land Transport, the Police, the chairmen and executive board members from the SHTA and the SCCI.

The Minister for Tourism, Alain St Ange was absent as he was heading a delegation to meet with the French trade and media in Paris. The Minister for Finance Pierre Laporte was also on an overseas mission.

First on the agenda was a brief from representatives from the Ministry of Education on the elements of tourism studies in the Seychelles school curriculum at Primary, Secondary and Upper Secondary levels. The SHTA strongly recommended that Tourism & Travel be introduced as a compulsory subject for two to five years, and a choice in A-Level studies. There is a need to sensitise our youth from their early teenage years of the importance of tourism to our economy, to make them aware of tourism as a potential career choice, and to recognise that tourism generates exchanges on the human level and thus understand at an early age the significance of taking pride in welcoming our visitors and in delivering friendly and excellent service.

Boat owners, operators in tourism sector voice out concerns

05-May-2016
Boat owners and operators in the tourism sector on Praslin recently had another opportunity to discuss issues affecting the daily functions of their specific businesses and operations and share their concerns with the minister of tourism and culture.
Minister Alain St Ange learned that the main challenges were the monopoly issue in boat charters and excursions in certain tourism establishments.
He got an insight of the challenges faced by these boat owners and together they discussed possible strategies to address the issue.
The ease of starting up and maintaining a business was also discussed with attendees expressing their difficulties including access to finance.
For his part Minister St. Ange reassured them and informed them of the ongoing effort of his ministry to continuously find ways to help locals to take charge of tourism and further develop the industry.
He encouraged them to remain proactive and innovative in their manner of conducting business as well as of the importance of collective collaboration and togetherness so as to further allow tourism to flourish on Praslin and in Seychelles as a whole.
The general need for service improvement was also highlighted and the minister called on each attendee to take up the challenge and start improving their products and services as we strive to attract more visitors to our island.
“Though we have had an increased visibility worldwide as a travel destination, we still remain in tight competition with the rest of the world and that should drive us to further intensify our efforts to make our islands shine among other travel destinations.” Minister St Ange said.
With an expected increase in the number of visitors due to an increase in airlines and flights to the Seychelles soon, Seychellois tourism operators should rest assured that the future remains bright. Follow-up meetings are being scheduled so as to discuss progress made on the matters discussed

Hilton Seychelles hotels welcome new general managers

06-July-2016

The three Hilton hotels in Seychelles have got new general managers.
They are Gregory Thierion, who will be heading the Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa and the DoubleTree by Hilton Seychelles Allamanda Resort & Spa, and Andre Borg, the new GM for Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa.
A reception was held recently to welcome the two new managers and at the same time to pay tribute to the outgoing cluster general manager of Hilton Seychelles Hotels Claus Steiner, who after four years in Seychelles will be moving on to another role within Hilton Worldwide.
Present at the reception were the Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St Ange, the Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Vincent Meriton, tourism principal secretary Anne Lafortune, among other local dignitaries and members of the business community.
Minister St Ange congratulated Mr Steiner on his achievements over the last few years as a true partner for the Seychelles tourism industry and who has played an active role in the development of hospitality for the resorts as well as the people of Seychelles.
A number of key milestones have been achieved within the Hilton Seychelles hotels in the last four years where the resorts have won 19 awards from international organisations like the World Travel Awards, Global Traveller Awards and Tripadvisor lauding us as the Best Resort in Africa and Indian Ocean’s Leading Spa Resort among others.
At the end of 2015 Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa opened the much awaited 16 luxury pool villas with a two-bedroom presidential villa with the largest private in-villa pool in the North part of Mahé.
DoubleTree by Hilton Seychelles Allamanda Resort & Spa opened in January 2014 and is highly successful not only in a financial perspective but also in the local community by being awarded the Community Care Award for Europe, Middle East and Africa Hotels within the Doubletree Brand for its contribution within the local community.
From a business perspective Mr Steiner has looked at synergies and opportunities to maximize resources and performance within his teams by implementing a cluster structure within departments like Business Development, Finance, Purchasing and IT.
In the wider community Mr Steiner serves as Board of Trustee member for the Silhouette Foundation as well as a member of the Mentoring Committee for the Seychelles Tourism Academy and Shannon College graduates to impart knowledge and expertise for the future leaders in hospitality.
Mr Steiner said: “It has been a great pleasure to discover Seychelles, one of the last paradises on Earth and to be able to lead three extraordinary resorts, each unique and successful in its own right. It is now time to welcome the new leaders to take the helm at Hilton Seychelles hotels to take them to the next level.”
