A dean of our tourism industry departs

07-May-2016
The local tourism industry has lost one of its most-longest serving members, Zita Monthy of Carefree Guest House, who recently passed away and was buried this week.
Tante Zita, as she was known, was a popular icon of the local tourism industry and operated the Carefree Guesthouse at Anse Faure for the past 43 years.
Together with her late husband Leon, they started off as a small guesthouse and a souvenir shop selling local handicrafts. They later extended more rooms followed by the opening of a restaurant serving the best delicacies of the Creole cuisine.
Tante Zita, aged 76 years old was one of the pioneers of the Seychelles’ tourism industry and was among the first Seychellois to open a guesthouse located not far from the Seychelles International Airport.
The delicacies of Tante Zita’s cooking served at the Carefree Restaurant was very popular with both local diners and visitors who ate there regularly and kept on coming back for their favourite dishes such as octopus coconut curry, grilled bourgeois with creole sauce, shark steak among a range of other Creole dishes personally prepared by her.
Among the several famous visitors who have dined at the Carefree Restaurant are top French actress, Isabelle Adjani and the legendary singer Henri Salvador.
Tante Zita leaves behind a legacy of her much-talked about Creole cuisine and the excellent hospitality of the Carefree Guesthouse and Restaurant to her only child, Rosemary Monthy, currently employed in the marketing department of Air Seychelles and carries a background of vast years of experience in the local tourism and travel industry.
Mrs Monthy’s funeral was held on last Wednesday at the St John Bosco Church at Pointe Larue and it was attended by a large group of mourners, including Tourism and Culture Minister Alain Ste Ange and senior tourism officials.
