Employees of Saifu Construction Company as well as those of different other companies who have been engaged to speed up the work are working around the clock to ensure the Ile Persévérance secondary school is ready to welcome 900 students at the beginning of the term on January 22.
A Seychelles NATION journalist dropped by the school yesterday to see the situation. Coincidentally a team from the Ministry of Habitat, Infrastructure and Land Transport (MHILT) as well as a team of auditors were on site for a routine inspection visit.
Workmen were everywhere and we learned that the work had fallen behind schedule after the decision to turn the school into a centre of excellence was announced, but it then resumed and other contractors had to be engaged to speed up the work. The hand-over date of the completed project is January 15.
“We are satisfied with the work done and with the progress made. Everything is on schedule,” said Felix Maranga, a senior quantity surveyor from the MHILT team. He and architect Danny Souffe said they carry out similar site visits every week to ensure the contractors are on site, that everything is going according to plan and to address any problems that may have come up.
Other than major works on the building itself, all the furniture are being assembled locally, some on site and others in workshops around the country. Some classrooms have already been furnished as the furniture is delivered.
Altogether eight contractors have been contracted to assemble 900 sets of tables and chairs ‒ the largest part if not all must be delivered by Friday next week.
The new Ile Persévérance secondary school project is being partly funded by loans from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), the Opec Fund for International Development (OFID) and the government of Seychelles.
Saifu Construction Company was awarded the contract for the project which has been conceptualised and designed by the then Ministry of Land Use and Housing (MLUH).
The foundation stone for the school was laid in March 2016.
The accompanying photographs give an idea of how far work on the new school has reached.
