Russia signs 30-year gas deal with China

We have been watching/monitoring this issues for the past three/four days covered by RT.TV and other media, Die Presse - previous attempts which had failed.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin has signed a multi-billion dollar, 30-year gas deal with China.
The deal between Russia's Gazprom and China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) has been 10 years in the making.
Russia has been keen to find an alternative energy market for its gas as it faces the possibility of European sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine.
No official price has been given but it is estimated to be worth over $400bn.
President Putin said in a statement to the Russian news channel Rossiya: "The price is satisfactory for both sides.
"It is tied, like it is envisaged in all our international contracts with Western partners, specifically our partners in Western Europe, to the price of gas and gas fuel. It is an absolutely calibrated, general formula for pricing,"
Gazprom shares rose 2% on the news.

Und sie haben es doch geschafft: Nach jahrzehntelangen Verhandlungen ist das russisch-chinesische Gaslieferabkommen unter Dach und Fach. Im Beisein der Präsidenten Wladimir Putin und Xi Jinping unterzeichneten die russische Gazprom und die China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) am Mittwoch in Shanghai die Verträge. Ab 2018 liefert Gazprom bis zu 38 Milliarden Kubikmeter Gas pro Jahr in die Volksrepublik. Über den bis zuletzt umstrittenen Preis für das Erdgas wurde nichts mitgeteilt. Putin sagte lediglich, die Preisbildung werde ähnlich der Lieferungen nach Europa erfolgen.
Das Geschäftsvolumen wird inoffiziell auf mehr als 400 Milliarden Dollar geschätzt. Für das in der Ukrainekrise unter Druck geratene Russland bedeutet das Abkommen die Erschließung eines neuen Absatzmarktes. China wiederum erhält in großem Umfang Zugang zu einer im Vergleich zur Kohle umweltfreundlicheren Energie.
Die Vereinbarung sieht Gaslieferungen über eine neue östliche Pipeline vor, die die Vorkommen in Sibirien mit den energiehungrigen Küstenregionen Chinas verbinden soll. Nach CNPC-Angaben soll Gazprom auf der russischen Seite die Fördergebiete erschließen und die Verarbeitungsanlagen errichten. Die Pipeline solle in beiden Ländern von den jeweiligen Unternehmen gebaut werden. Putin sagte, China werde 20 Milliarden Dollar zum Bau der Infrastruktur und die Gasförderung beisteuern. Russland werde 55 Milliarden Dollar in die Erschließung von Vorkommen und den Bau der Pipeline investieren.
Politischer Erfolg für Putin
Für Putin ist das Abkommen ein politischer Erfolg. Angesichts des Streits mit dem Westen in der Ukraine-Krise fürchtet Russland um seine Gasgeschäfte mit Europa und versucht verstärkt neue Einnahmequellen in Asien zu erschließen. Die Ukraine hat inmitten des Konflikts um die Halbinsel Krim und die Ostukraine ihre Zahlungen für russisches Gas eingestellt und Gazprom überhöhte Preise vorgeworfen. Russland hat daraufhin damit gedroht, Anfang Juni die Lieferungen an den Nachbarn einzustellen. Dies könnte auch Abnehmer im übrigen Europa treffen, die über die Leitungen in der Ukraine beliefert werden.
Ob das Abkommen sich auch wirtschaftlich rechnet, bleibt eine offene Frage, solange der genaue Preis, den die Chinesen für das Erdgas zu zahlen bereit sind, und andere Details des Abkommens nicht klar sind. Nach den Worten Putins soll sich die Preisbildung wie bei den Lieferungen nach Europa am Preis für Erdöl und Erdölprodukten orientieren. (Reuters)

Agreement is still to be reached on the price China will pay Russia for gas, a Chinese official said on Tuesday.
Domestic experts said the country's diversified energy import structure will be unaffected.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's two-day visit to China started on Tuesday. Expectations from both countries are high that about two decades of negotiations will supply China with 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually through pipelines.

China imports more natural gas in 2013
Both sides are accelerating discussions, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.
Under the plan, Russia's top natural gas producer, Gazprom OAO, will agree with China National Petroleum Corp to begin supplies from 2018 via the eastern gas pipeline.
Imports will increase to 68 billion cu m when the infrastructure allows.
The deal would last for 30 years. Analysts estimate it is worth $400 billion.
Wang Xiaokun, an analyst at domestic commodities consultancy Sublime China Information Co Ltd, said price remains the core obstacle.
"China has stable natural gas supply from both pipelines and liquefied natural gas imports with a diversified structure," said Wang.
Russia is under the pressure of its growing friction with the West over Ukraine. China has remained neutral. Crimea, which was part of Ukraine, joined Russia this year.
"It is understandable that China wants the price to be lower," said Wang.
Sun Yongxiang, a professor with the Euro-Asian Social Development Research Institute of the State Council's Development Research Center, said the price will be about $380 per 1,000 cu m, which is closer to Russia's export price to Europe.
"The price is higher than we expected," he said.
