LDS supporters swamp Victoria

The sun is hardly up out of bed, yet swathes of LDS supporters have already taken to the streets of Victoria in anticipation of an expected landslide victory for the opposition party in Seychelles’ 2020 general elections.
Independence Avenue has effectively descended into a site of blissful chaos, a carnival-like atmosphere enveloping the historic road that leads right to the gates of State House.
“This land is mine! I am free!” one visibly emotional man screamed from a passing truck. LDS flags are flying high. The festivities appear to have begun.
Though the final results of the Presidential Election are yet to be officially declared, the votes of 20 districts had been tallied by 7am, according to the Electoral Commission.
Official statistics shared with TODAY show Wavel Ramkalawan has received 27,167 votes (55.5%), with Danny Faure at 21,009 votes (42.9%) and Alain St Ange at 788 votes (1.6%). Votes from the remaining six districts are yet to be unveiled. Meanwhile, LDS also seems to be on course for a majority in the National Assembly.
An official announcement of the results of both elections are expected to be broadcast from the Electoral Commission Headquarters at around 10am.

Seychelles’ President Wavel Ramkalawan sworn into office

The new President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. President Wavel John Charles Ramkalawan was sworn into office today at State House. During the ceremony the President-Elect took the Oath of Allegiance and Presidential Oath, before the Acting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Honourable Justice Melchior Vidot, in the presence of the outgoing President, Mr Danny Antoine Rollen Faure and other distinguished guests.
Addressing the people of Seychelles for the first time as President, Mr. Ramkalawan called on all citizens of the country to remember that they are all Seychellois no matter which party they support and urged everyone to unite as a people to build a better future for Seychelles.
He continued, “For the five years that you have elected me in this office, I encourage every Seychellois to play their part in making a contribution for the further development of our nation. I believe no Seychellois should be left behind, so I call on everyone in whichever capacity that you are serving the country today, to remember you are not only working for yourself but also for your beloved country.”
The President also underlined the need for national unity in Seychelles and to reinforce democracy. He called on everyone to put aside any feelings of bitterness, vengeance and anger. He stressed on the need to create opportunities for every Seychellois and urged everyone to seize the opportunities, work hard and lend a hand in its development.
During his inaugural address, the President thanked the outgoing President Danny Faure for his devotion, the love he has for his country and for working hard for the benefit of Seychelles. He also thanked the outgoing President for the good relations that exist between the two of them. He expressed the hoped that the transition continues in peace between two leaders who respect one another and continues to set an example for all citizens in the communities.
President Ramkalawan also thanked members of the Diplomatic Corps present and International partners for their continued support and contribution towards the development of Seychelles. He pledged the government’s commitment to continue strengthening the diplomatic ties.

Seychelles' Leaders working together in the best interest of the Country
The newly elected President of the Republic, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan alongside Former President Danny Faure held a series of meetings this morning at State House with officials of the various key departments and institution. The discussions held, forms part of efforts to work together and ensure a peaceful, calm transition process in the best interest of the Country.
This follows the inaugural ceremony held yesterday, where President Ramkalawan succeeding Former President Faure, was formally sworn into office as the 5th President of the Republic of Seychelles.
Aside from being the Head of State, the President is also the Commander in Chief of the Seychelles Peoples Defense Forces (SPDF), therefore the first meeting held this morning was with the SPDF Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Colonel Clifford Roseline and the SPDF Chief of Staff, Colonel Michael Rosette.
He also met with the Commissioner of Police, Mr Kishnan Labonte followed by a meeting with the Director General of the Seychelles Intelligence Service, Mr Benediste Hoareau.
Aside from meeting with officials engaged in the Law Enforcement domain, President Ramkalawan under the guidance of Former President Danny Faure also held discussions with the Principal Secretary for Administration for the Office of the President Mrs, Yvonia Richardson.

The National Assembly has been summoned for its first meeting of the 7th Cohort by the President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Mr Wavel Ramkalawan.
This meeting will be held tomorrow on Wednesday the 28th of October, 2020 at the precinct of the National Assembly of Seychelles, Ile du Port, and will begin at 10:00AM.
During this meeting, the new Members will also be taking their Oath of Allegiance and the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker to the 7th National Assembly will be elected.
The Order Paper, detailing the Business of the House will be published tomorrow.

THE FIRST MEETING OF THE FIRST SESSION OF THE 7TH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.
By Proclamation in the Official Gazette, the President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan has summoned the First Sitting of the first Meeting of the first Session of the 7th National Assembly for Wednesday the 28 th of October, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. The current Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Nicholas Prea, will preside over the swearing in ceremony of the new Members of the National Assembly with the highlight being the election of the new Speaker. The House will adjourn after the election of the Speaker and resume its Sitting at 14.00 p.m. with the newly elected Speaker in the Chair, who will preside over the election of the Deputy Speaker, Leader of the Opposition (LOTO) and the Leader of Government Business (LGB). Other business on the Order Paper will include the approval for the Cabinet of Ministers being proposed by the President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan. The new Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly, Ms. Alexandria Faure, will also take her Oath of Allegiance during the Sitting.

We have a new Speaker of the House. Hon. Roger Mancienne, party leader of Linyon Demokratik Seselwa has been elected Speaker of the 7th National Assembly of Seychelles. Former Speaker of the 6th National Assembly Nicholas Préa has now vacated the Speaker's Chair and the Chamber.

Apart from the election of the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker to the National Assembly, there was also the election of the Leader of the Opposition and the Leader of Government Business in today’s first meeting of the 7th Cohort.
Hon. Sebastien Pillay has been elected as the new Leader of the Opposition, whereas Hon. Bernard Georges has been elected as the new Leader of Government Business.
