French PM Manuel Valls resigns amid economy row

French PM Manuel Valls has submitted the government's resignation to President Francois Hollande and has been asked to form a new cabinet.

The government was badly shaken on Sunday by criticism over its handling of the economy by economy minister Arnaud Montebourg.

Moments after Mr Valls's resignation Mr Hollande issued a statement.

He asked Mr Valls to set up a new cabinet "consistent with the direction [Mr Hollande] has set for the country".

The prime minister had accused Mr Montebourg of "crossing a yellow line" after the economy minister had attacked austerity measures which he said were strangling France's growth.

Mr Montebourg told a meeting of Socialists in eastern France that the time had come to put up a "just and sane resistance" to the "excessive obsessions of Germany's conservatives".

France awaits new government

France's prime minister was set to appoint a new cabinet on Tuesday after tendering his government's resignation amid a row over economic policy, plunging the country into a fresh political crisis.

As desperately unpopular President Francois Hollande battles to overcome splits in his ruling Socialists and revive the stagnant French economy, Manuel Valls was expected to announce the make-up of his team in the afternoon.

The shock resignation on Monday was seen as a bid to restore order after a weekend of sniping from economy minister Arnaud Montebourg who attacked France's economic direction and the country's main European ally Germany.

Montebourg, a left-wing firebrand who is no stranger to controversy, made it clear he would not be part of the new team and launched a hefty broadside at the policies of austerity he said had catapulted France and Europe into the worst economic crisis since the 1929 Depression.

Education minister Benoit Hamon and culture minister Aurelie Filippetti later said they would join him in self-imposed exile from the next government.

Top French daily Le Monde described the reshuffle as "the last chance for the president to save his five-year term" as Hollande faces record-low unpopularity at 17 percent and record-high unemployment.

The reshuffle was also a desperate bid to quell unseemly infighting in his ruling Socialists between left-leaning members like Montebourg and those, like Valls, who tend more to the centre.

Martine Aubry va sortir de son silence

LE SCAN POLITIQUE - Selon ses proches, la maire de Lille souhaite peser à son tour sur les orientations économiques du gouvernement, qui ne lui conviennent pas.

Depuis le début du quinquennat, c'est surtout par la bouche de ses proches au PS que la pensée de Martine Aubry s'est exprimée. Et c'est également l'un de ses lieutenants qui prépare le terrain pour ce qui pourrait être son grand retour sur la scène politico-médiatique. Invité par l'Opinion ce mardi matin, le député frondeur Jean-Marc Germain annonce que la maire de Lille en a visiblement assez de ronger son frein, alors que la majorité menace d'exploser: «Maintenant, on est dans la réflexion, dans la conception de mesures pour les trois ans à venir pour le pays. Et Martine Aubry, chaque fois qu'il faut être utile à son pays par ses idées, par sa voix, elle l'est».

La maire de Lille et ses proches cumulent les griefs contre l'exécutif: personne n'a semble-t-il digéré l'éviction de François Lamy, ex-ministre délégué à la Ville, à l'occasion de la formation du premier gouvernement Valls. Jean-Marc Germain souligne que les aubrystes «ont regretté le départ de François Lamy (…) parce qu'il était très important qu'un gouvernement puisse représenter la majorité et que chacun puisse se sentir confortable». Une problématique qui ne semble pas sur le point de se dénouer puisque selon les informations de iTélé et BFM, le député de l'Essonne aurait été contacté par le gouvernement pour revenir aux affaires, mais aurait décliné l'offre.

We/I have addressed several correspondence to Madam Aubry in various capacity - stressing the issues of that SIROP program, the Channel Tunnel Project and the Nord pas de Calais Development under then President F Mitterrand and - those who know when you get involved in such development even after a Head of state dies or is no longer in Power you stay committed and engage - this we have , events and issues.  Most important the rebuilding of Lille, economic issues. {(Our correspondence is monitored be they by NSA, CIA, White House and Pentagon, NATO, British Intelligence, French, Russian, Chinese and African Union beside others. Most important the global meltdown in 2007/8 the corrupted Financial and political accountability - we have been in Lille 3/4 times and we could have called on her as we have the Marie of Calais.

In Lille there is a very important Regus Office, those form the EU Commission and African Union who requested we call on them and the issues of setting up an office for SIROP in Lille.

We have explained how we went to Calais and Vienna - the Ukraine situation was not blown up and the economic situation in France was better.  With due respect we believe the French people ought o demand  an account of Madam Aubry - she never bother to acknowledge my letter or reply - yet she is the Mayor of Lille.

Is it the dreadful corrupted benchmark - those who have information and very sensitive information use them for their Office and person, they deny it. We have stated, time and time the workings of that High Interdisciplinary discipline we work with and have responsibility have regulatory mechanism and the many instance over the past 30 years it have been applied and the outcome.

President Francois Hollande ought to call her in His Office and ask her for an explanation.

If/should the French media get hold of this issues she will never be able to lead the PS again-let alone French Presidential Candidate.

This Morning we woke up to being terrorize/bullied  by a particular British Minister who know and follow French politic very well - the methods and manner they have kicked the French in the teeth and in their back. (The local people/individuals they use then lie and deny it. Very much like the many years of abuses and when one tries to report and protest one get threaten and intimidated - - until something terrible happens.)

Ex-Minister Fires Back After Ouster in France

PARIS — Arnaud Montebourg, ousted this week as President François Hollande’s economy minister after bucking the French government’s line on austerity, warned on Wednesday that Europe was headed for serious economic problems unless officials overcame an obsession with budget deficits and began tackling the problems of low growth and high unemployment.

“We have to prioritize growth,” Mr. Montebourg said in an interview the day after he was replaced in the reshuffled French cabinet with Emmanuel Macron, a former investment banker and adviser to Mr. Hollande. “We shouldn’t focus solely on the deficit.”

“You have Nobel economists — Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman — as well as Gerhard Schröder,” the former German chancellor, “all of them are arguing that it’s impossible to reduce the deficit without growth,” Mr. Montebourg said.

La ministre des outre-mer, George Pau-Langevin, a démissionné mardi 30 août, à la surprise générale, laissant son poste à Ericka Bareigts, précédemment secrétaire d’Etat chargée de l’égalité réelle. L’Elysée a annoncé que la ministre avait souhaité « mettre un terme à ses fonctions ministérielles pour des raisons personnelles ». Elle a dit vouloir « retrouver le contact avec le terrain ».
Mme Pau-Langevin, 67 ans, avait fait part depuis quelque temps de sa volonté de récupérer son poste de député de la 15e circonscription de Paris (20e arrondissement), et elle souhaitait quitter le gouvernement à l’automne, selon son entourage. Mais le départ d’Emmanuel Macron mardi a précipité les choses, l’exécutif ne souhaitant pas faire deux remaniements à quelques mois d’intervalle et juste avant l’élection présidentielle.
