NGOs reach out to the public

Over 20 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) came together on Saturday in a manifestation organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Lungos (liaison unit for NGOs), with the initiative of SGP (Small Grants Programme).
The aim of the manifestation was to get the NGOs to raise awareness on their organisation, their aims, what they have done and their future plans.
The NGOs also seized the moment to recruit new members and raise funds for their organisations.
There were different activities and exhibitions put up by the NGOs among which were Nou La Pour Ou, Les Li Viv, Action Group of Women in Parliament, Friends of Prison and many others.
The manifestation, which also included a musical show by artist Joseph Sinon and his group, lasted from 9am to 6pm.
Speaking at the official opening of the event, the Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Vincent Meriton congatulated all partners for making the manifestation a reality.
“I am so happy that Lungos is working immensely towards the Renaissance Sociale campaign so that people can live better in the community with one self and together as a family,” the minister said.
It was Lungos chairperson Marie-Nella Azemia who officially opened the manifestation, saying: “I am very happy with the turn-out. This manifestation is very important because it coincides with the Small Islands Developing States Conference which will be held soon in Samoa. This manifestation demonstrates the determination of the civil society in its engagement and responsibility to take the ownership of our country’s situation.”
She took the opportunity to thank all NGOs which took part in the manifestation.
