How Leon Brittan became the youngest Home Secretary since Winston Churchill
Leon Brittan was today hailed as 'by far and away the most brilliant of his generation' after a stellar career which took him from Hampstead to the House of Commons.
Born on September 25 1939, the son of a north London doctor who had emigrated from Berlin, Brittan was brought up in the Orthodox Jewish tradition.
He won a scholarship from his state primary school to Haberdasher's Aske's School in Hampstead and went to gain a double first from Trinity College, Cambridge.
At University he became president of the Union and chairman of the Conservative Association.
In 1961, he was called to the Bar and pursued a successful career as a libel lawyer, taking silk in 1978. But his ambitions to enter the House of Commons were frustrated for 10 years.
He fought and lost North Kensington in 1966 and 1970, and was rejected as Tory candidate by more than a dozen safer Tory seats.
Finally, he was elected for Cleveland and Whitby in 1974. Before long he was in Mrs Thatcher's shadow team, first as a deputy spokesman on devolution and then in employment.
When she won the 1979 election, Lord Brittan became minister of state at the Home Office. Within two years he was in the Cabinet as chief secretary to the Treasury. Only days before that promotion he married divorcee Diana Peterson, who had two daughters.
In this post, he was an instant success, courteous and decisive and quickly aware of areas where compromises could be successfully reached in his battle to keep public spending under control.
But a cloud on the horizon was the projected disappearance of his parliamentary constituency. Lord Brittan, despite his proven ability, had trouble finding another seat to fight.

Comment - Obviously nobody read the issues of our involvement with then Prof Dr Michael Hofmann, Prof Von Hayak and very many others is finding a solution back in 1981/2 to Britain economic woes - those who knew but keep quiet and were involved.
The Ethic/Benchmark when you work with such important national or global issues and the respective high personalities involved who took part form a High Interdisciplinary/Multidisciplinary approach/prospective - you/one is trained what one is to share and not to share with/in the public. It is part of the Training/discipline.
The rules is you take the due time and wait/approach those who regulate and monitor such workings of a or several given issues when they refuse to make correction or take a saner approach you reserve the rights to present the topic or issues in public. Depending how pressing/grave.
When we came to London in 1981 we came with a very great deal of Baggage's form Austria, Germany, France, Italy etc. Among them the issue of our important Jewish working right across the board and personality like Sir James Goldsmith was well aware.
As part of you duty/work one is required to undertake all kinds of what is termed as Interventions on behalf for a given issues or set of issues. A pity we did not have Wiki Leak, Facebook or Wikipedia then the world would have been written very different. The point is we contributed and made important imputes for many of then Lady Thatcher Cabinet Officials - one is not supposed to talk, write and discus such issues.
Most important the debacle of his appointment a EU Commissioner we were importantly involved in that process, the rule you just do not help with the appointment you have to be able to make the due interventions as and when is required/ask - those who are still alive and remembers - The point is that those high personalities know are supposed to know a great deal of what has been done for them or in their respective Office. The very many from Lady Thatcher surrounding, Officials instead of showing appreciations and the fact that we have not written book and the many issues of Intellectual rights.
Within the workings of High Interdisciplinary /multidisciplinary science/management there are very many process of accountability, reporting and communicating.
It is a disgrace to this science when you find/get High personalities and individuals holding what is explained as leading position in the world and society at the end of the day the reality.

MP Raises New Questions Over Brittan Sex Claims
A Labour MP has called on police to redouble their efforts to investigate allegations of serious sexual assault against the late Lord Brittan.
Just days after the former home secretary's death, Tom Watson has insisted he is right to speak out on behalf of survivors of child abuse.
Lord Brittan, who was home secretary in Margaret Thatcher's government, died last week after suffering from cancer.
Speaking to Sky News, Mr Watson said: "My condolences go to the Brittan family. I know they will be grieving a loved one, what I say will be distressing for them.
"The reason I have said that two people have come forward to allege rape is that I believe survivors need their voice heard in this debate.
"There is a police inquiry and they need certainty that the police inquiry will continue even after the death of Leon Brittan."
The West Bromwich East MP revealed he had held long meetings with two of the alleged victims.
