A man watches waves crashing on January 14, 2024 as authorities on France's Indian Ocean Reunion Island urged residents to stock up on food and water ahead of a tropical storm that risks strengthening to a cyclone before it hits later tonight. The storm, dubbed Belal, could hammer the island with winds of up to 150 km/h (90 mph) if it only passes nearby, according to the Meteo France weather service. (Photo by Richard BOUHET / AFP)

(AFP) - Residents on France's Reunion Island were confined to their homes early Monday, as the authorities issued the highest alert for what they said could become a devastating tropical storm.
