Seypec introduces higher quality gasoil ‘diesel’ for local market

01-March-2016

The Seychelles Petroleum Company (Seypec) has introduced an improved quality gasoil ‘diesel’ for its domestic market.
The improved grade contains 50ppm (parts per million) of sulphur as opposed to 500ppm which has been in use since 2010.
The operations and technical manager Ray Hoareau said the transition to the 50ppm gasoil represents a move directly in line with efforts to deliver enhanced quality, more environmentally friendly and sustainable products, given the sensitive nature of our islands striving towards attaining the National environment conservation outlined in the ‘Seychelles Sustainable Development Strategy 2012-2020’.
“As you know the global world is gearing towards environment protection so we at Seypec feel it is also our responsibility to join the environment protection campaign by introducing a 50ppm gasoil,” he said.
He said the cost of this higher grade product is more expensive but it should not have a direct impact on the price on the local market which is R14.48 per litre at the moment.
Talking about the benefits of this new product Mr Hoareau said the reduced level of sulphur in the fuel leads to reduced health risks and pollution due to the cleaner properties of the fuel and reduced emissions of particulate matter from diesel engines and machinery.
Quality wise, the product is one superior to its predecessor and meets the Euro 4 standard. The reduced sulphur content of the fuel has numerous advantages such as reduction in particulate matter towards black smoke emissions, increase in the combustion efficiency, reduction of engine component corrosion, engine lubricating oil is less prone to acidification hence reduced frequency of oil change, more efficient engine performance and an increase in the fuel economy, increase in the lifetime of the engine and catalytic converter.
The 50ppm gasoil will be the sole gasoil product distributed domestically, and will lead to greater harmonisation of product grades throughout the Indian Ocean region.
As such, Seychelles joins a list of African countries and neighbouring islands who have successfully made the change-over, and furthermore allowing for potentially more competitive prices to be sought.
African countries using the product are Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa, Morocco, and most European Union accession countries in central and Eastern Europe including many others around the world.
Seypec has been engaged in an active education exercise over the past 12 months with all its major diesel customers to gauge their response on the introduction of this product.
The total diesel consumption is 55 million litres annually and 73% are taken up by the industry and tourism sector, 22% are used by motorists and 5% is for public transport.
Their main customers include hotels, Public Utilities Corporation (PUC), Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) and United Concrete Products Seychelles (UCPS).
Mr Hoareau said the high demand for gasoil by hotels is because they produce their own electricity or have their own back-up generators.
The gasoil is ready to be distributed as from today (March 1, 2016) to the petrol stations and other consumers.
