A youth steering committee for the Seychelles Farmers’ Association (SeyFa) was launched during its strategic consultation and annual general Mr Benstrong addressing the gatheringmeeting on Wednesday afternoon.
The theme of the meeting was ‘Developing strong agri value chain to become bankable small scale agriculture entrepreneurs’.
The gathering was held at Maison De Football, Roche Caiman in the presence of members of the association and fellow farmers.
Derick Amade, a 36-year-old farmer who has two farms, one situated at La Misère and the other at Bel Ombre, is the leader of the youth steering committee.
He said this group has been formed with the aim of attracting more youths to the association and revamp the agricultural sector.
“We want to bring Seychelles agriculture industry back to the heights it was at 20 years ago and make young people understand the importance of farming,” he said.
The committee now has only four members and they are still looking for more to join them.
During the meeting there was also the launch of SeyFa Agric Enterprise which has been set up to face marketing challenges of SeyFa.
SeyFa chairman Serge Benstrong said it will enable the members supply their products in an organised fashion with standards.
There will be a management board set up to chair the enterprise.
There were various presentations including the chairman’s report for 2014, audited financial report for 2013, work plan budget for 2016, the Co-operatives Act, the business plan and the resolutions.
The SeyFa executive committee was also expected to be elected on that day but due to lack of quorum it has been postponed to a new date which will be communicated to the members later.
