Obituary: Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali was, at his peak, arguably the most famous man on the planet.
His prodigious boxing talent was matched only by a towering self-belief.
"I am the greatest," he said, and who could doubt a man who won the World Heavyweight Championship three times.
His outspoken support for civil rights endeared him to millions of people across the world.
He was born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville, Kentucky, on 17 January 1942, the son of a sign painter. He was named after a prominent 19th Century abolitionist.
When he was 12, he reported his bicycle had been stolen and told a police officer he was going to "whup" the culprit.
The officer, Joe Martin, trained young fighters at a local gym and suggested the youngster learn to box before he challenged the thief.
Clay quickly took to the ring, making his competitive debut in 1954 in a three-minute amateur bout.
"He stood out because he had more determination than most boys," Martin later recalled. "He was easily the hardest worker of any kid I ever taught."
Over the following five years, his amateur career flourished and he won a number of awards including the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in 1959

Obituary: Muhammad Ali Empty Special offer on all eye tests at Vision Care

Special offer on all eye tests at Vision Care

04-June-2016
You can get free, comprehensive eye tests including eye pressure, prescription for glasses and tests for any eye diseases free of charge at Vision Care, Riverside.
This special offer is going on for the whole month of June to mark National Day and 40 years of the country’s independence.
Optometrist Sven Mehlhorn said this offer applies only for Mahé but not Praslin and La Digue because although they have a shop on Praslin, it is expensive to conduct the tests there.
Mr Mehlhorn’s message to those who are hesitant about coming down is: “This is a good chance for people who don’t know if they have any problems with their eyes or they are wondering if they need glasses. They can also come to check for glaucoma or diabetes and there are obviously other problems which can be detected while doing the test.”
For people who are already wearing glasses and they think it’s time to renew them he said it is always good to make new eye tests before so you can have the latest prescription.
This promotion follows one which was held earlier this year whereby pensioners and children were able to get free eye tests.
Commenting on the prior promotion, Mr Mehlhorn said it was a great success and plenty of pensioners took the opportunity to get their eyes tested and at the same time they found quite a number of children who needed glasses.
To make an appointment call Vision Care, Riverside on 4322792 or 2525212.

Muhammad Ali: fighter, joker, magician, religious disciple, preacher

Muhammad Ali is dead. That is a sentence as difficult to write as it is to comprehend. At his loudest and most beautiful, he seemed, illogically, beyond destruction. Even in his palsied state in the championship rounds of his life, his eyes sparkled and his wit remained as sharp as the punches with which he tormented nearly all of his 61 opponents. So imperious was he that those of us who were entranced by him in the 60s and 70s hoped against every rational expectation that he would never leave the party, even though he had used up his champagne moments a long time ago. Ali, a born illusionist, teased us to the end.

When the news arrived that Ali had died aged 74 in Phoenix, Arizona, after a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, its inevitability did not soften the blow for admirers who numbered in their billions. He lived in an era of mass communication that led John Lennon to claim the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ; Ali made a compelling case to push them into third place.

Muhammad Ali funeral: a fitting final procession for 'Louisville’s son'

As mourners lined the streets of downtown Louisville on Friday, some mournful, some celebratory, they returned to one word again and again as they absorbed the scene before them: “History.”

On Ninth Street, the hearse carrying the body of Muhammad Ali moved slowly, and as it passed, the crowd burst into a full-throated shout of “Ali! Ali!”, as though to wake the great boxer from a sleep.

Some 300 students get new glasses

11-June-2016

Students from ten schools on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue have received glasses from the Lion’s Club of Seychelles.
Following the screening of 3000 students from 28 schools by the Lion’s Club of Seychelles in February and March this year, 1800 of them were found to need glasses.
A first batch of 260 glasses were handed over to ten of those schools yesterday during a short ceremony held at the Seychelles Institute for Teacher Education (Site) in the presence of the principal secretary (PS) for early childhood, primary and secondary education Merida Delcy, Dr Steve Fanny, Lion’s Club zone chairperson Lion G. Siva Pillay, Lion’s Club Seychelles President Dr Valentina Seth, Lion’s Club members, health and education officers, students and parents.
Mr Pillay said these screening started last year whereby five schools were screened and out of 3000 students, 103 of them received glasses.
He said these glasses being sponsored by Lion’s Club International comes from the Lion’s Eye Hospital, Leresho, Kenya and there was a delay in the delivery as the students who had sight problems did not show up for their appointment to find their prescription but the rest will be

distributed soon.
“After all 1800 glasses are shipped in and distributed it would cost approximately R1 million,” he added.
He urged the students and teachers not to hesitate to contact them if they face any difficulties with the glasses.
However 26 glasses given to Port Gaud primary school have been sponsored by Agarwal Eye Hospital.
During the ceremony Dr Fanny became a member of the Lion’s Club fraternity.
PS Delcy said the Lion’s Club of Seychelles is a faithful partner of the Ministry of Education.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Education, students and parents I wish to extend my gratitude and thanks for taking good care of our children,” she said.
She urged the students to take good care of the glasses as it will help them to focus better in their studies and be more productive.
