New Seychelles ambassador accredited to the Czech Republic

30-August-2016
Ambassador PillaySelby Pillay is the new Seychelles ambassador to the Czech Republic.
He presented his credentials to Czech President Miloš Zeman on Tuesday August 23, 2016 at the Prague Castle, which is also the official seat and residence of the President.
Mr Pillay is Seychelles’ second ambassador to be accredited since the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Czech Republic in January 1993.
Both countries are keen to further enhance the ties of bilateral relations, especially in the areas of tourism, trade and international security, the latter through the fight against piracy and terrorism.
“It is to be recalled that the Czech Republic, through the EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA, also contributed towards keeping our country safe from the scourge of piracy emanating from neighbouring Somalia,” said Ambassador Pillay.
He continued by saying that “without the support of our development partners, such as the EU, including the Czech Republic, it would have been very challenging to surmount the predicament in which we found ourselves when modern piracy unexpectedly visited us”.
“The two countries have enjoyed excellent relationship and a number of Seychellois students have in the past greatly benefitted from the knowledge imparted by some of the world’s best educational establishments, in the likes of Charles University which was the first one in Central Europe, and also happens to be the oldest and largest in the Czech Republic,” said the ambassador.
He urged prospective Seychellois students to take the opportunity to further their education in the Czech Republic, which joined the European Union in 2004.
During Ambassador Pillay’s discussions with Czech President Zeman, the latter congratulated Seychelles for her political stability, remarkable economic progress and success, as well as recent graduation to high-level income status.
The president was also very keen to update himself on our Blue economy, the sustainability of our environment and proactive role that Seychelles plays in the fight against climate change, recent tourism developments and fisheries industry.
Since July 5, 2016, Jana Štefánková is Seychelles’ new honorary consul in Prague, replacing Ernst Pindur, with whom she collaborated very closely in consular matters until his demise.
Mr Pillay is Seychelles’ Brussels-based ambassador who is not only currently accredited to Belgium and the EU, but also to the ACP, Germany, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Switzerland and major Geneva-based international organisations.
