Pirate attack on tanker cause for concern
17-March-2017
The latest pirate attack on a tanker off the coast of Somalia earlier this week demonstrates the need to remain vigilant in the fight against piracy.
This is the view of Ambassador Barry Faure, chair of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS), who said he was alarmed by reports that a tanker, the ARIS 13, with eight Sri Lankan nationals onboard, was captured by Somali pirates on Monday March 13, 2017 off the coast of Somalia.
“Our thoughts are of course with the crew and their families at this uncertain time,” says Ambassador Faure in a statement.
“The CGPCS has led international efforts to suppress piracy attacks in the Western Indian Ocean and there have been no attacks on commercial vessels since May 2012. Nevertheless, it has always been acknowledged that the conditions that allow pirate gangs to operate in some parts of Somalia remain in place: with coastal areas beyond the control of law enforcement offering an operating base for pirates and an anchorage for captured vessels. For that reason, the CGPCS has continued to coordinate the international response to the continued threat of piracy: ensuring that the important work of the world’s navies to deter attacks, the best management practice set out by the International Maritime Organisation to protect ships and the land based response led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, combine to ensure the world's shipping can operate safely in the region. This confirmed attack demonstrates clearly that we must remain vigilant,” the statement reads.
