Italian family gives medical equipment to Logan hospital

Italian family gives medical equipment to Logan hospital - 10.05.2013
The Gallo family from Italy has given a batch of medical equipment to the Logan Hospital on La Digue.

Health Minister Mitcy Larue accepted the donation made through the Italian Consul to Seychelles Claudio Izzi during a short ceremony at the Seychelles Hospital on Wednesday.
The batch of mainly emergency care equipment which would later be transferred to La Digue include trauma boards with head blocks, scoop stretchers, medical bags complete with contents, neck collars, laryngoscopes with disposable blades of different sizes and diagnostic sets.
The idea for the donation came about after Angelo Gallo, an Italian gentleman, his two sons and some friends came on holiday to Seychelles in January last year on a chartered yacht.
While on La Digue Gallo suffered a stroke and was rushed to the Logan Hospital where in spite of all medical attention he sadly passed away.
But the effort of the staff who scrambled to do all in their power to save his life was witnessed and greatly admired by his sons and friends.
“Even though Mr Gallo passed away the family was touched by the commitment of the staff to try and save his life and this donation is a way to show its appreciation and say thank you,’’ said Mr Izzi.
He said the family sought his advice on the best way to help the La Digue medical team and they agreed on a donation of medical equipment the small hospital needed as identified by the health ministry.
The family then raised some funds from friends and relatives to buy the equipment donated to the Logan Hospital through the health ministry.
“Despite the sad occasion it is important to underline that the health ministry and its staff try their best to help save the lives of tourists and locals alike”.
Minister Larue for her part expressed her ministry’s sincere gratitude to the Gallo family, Mr Izzi and all those who have contributed in one way or another to this wonderful endeavour.
“We are indeed very touched by this kind gesture which will no doubt contribute to the health ministry’s effort to better equip and strengthen health facilities on La Digue,” added Minister Larue.
