Air Seychelles and Air Serbia team up on codeshare flights to tropical islands

Air Seychelles and Air Serbia have signed a new codeshare agreement that makes it easier for travellers to fly to the tropical islands of Seychelles.
The codeshare deal sees Air Serbia place its JU flight code on four routes operated by Air Seychelles, from Paris and Abu Dhabi to Mahé, as well as from Mahé to Johannesburg and Praslin.
This will provide Air Serbia guests with better connectivity to the Seychelles and South Africa.
In addition, guests can take advantage of flights with Air Seychelles to two popular destinations in the Indian Ocean: Mauritius and Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, the fourth-largest island in the world.
The new codeshare agreement complements an existing codeshare between Air Serbia and Etihad Airways for flights to Seychelles over Abu Dhabi, expanding the flight options available to guests who are planning to travel to the archipelago.
In return, Air Seychelles will expand its flight network by adding the HM flight code on four routes operated by Air Serbia, from Abu Dhabi and Paris to Belgrade, as well as on onward flights from Belgrade to Prague and Moscow, providing leisure and business travellers with smooth connections from Seychelles to Serbia, the Czech Republic and Russia.
Roy Kinnear, chief executive of Air Seychelles, said: “We are happy to sign this codeshare agreement with Air Serbia, improving air connectivity between the Seychelles and Southeast Europe.

Air Seychelles has sent the following clarifications in response to the ‘Letter to the Editor’ by Alexia G. Amesbury published in the July 12 issue of the Today in Seychelles newspaper.
“Air Seychelles is the national airline and a commercial business with a mandate to create value for both Seychelles and its people. Over the past four years, since the introduction of the Air Seychelles/Etihad Airways partnership agreement, the airline has recorded achievements including the following:
• Fourth year of profitability reported in 2015;
• Achieved four-star Skytrax airline rating in 2013;
• World Travel Awards 2016 rewarded Air Seychelles with Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline, Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline - Cabin Crew, Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline – Business Class and Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline – Economy Class;
• Increased the proportion of Seychellois pilots to 69% of the total (66 out of 95 pilots);
• Pilot salary structures benchmarked against international standards and upgraded in 2015;
• Over 200 Seychellois Cabin Crew trained in the world class Etihad Airways training academy;
• 18 young Seychellois enrolled in the Etihad graduate management programme, seven of whom have already graduated and taken up roles in Air Seychelles;
• Seven Seychellois cadet engineers trained in Abu Dhabi returning to support the Airbus fleet;
• Replaced ageing Boeing 767 aircraft with modern Airbus A330/A320 fleet;
• Financed the introduction of three new Twin Otters to grow domestic fleet to six aircraft;

• Enabled online web purchase and check-in of international and domestic tickets;
• Since 2014 grown the number of residents travelling on domestic flights by over 84% to over 9,000 per month;
• Reduced operating cost per seat by over 10% since 2013;
• Substantial cost savings achieved by having a joint procurement process in place through the Etihad Airways partnership;
• Codeshare partnerships increased from one to 61 in 30 countries with Etihad Airways partner airlines and other airlines, contributing 41% to the airline’s total revenue;
• Air Seychelles positioned as the gateway to Indian Ocean for all Etihad Airways partner airlines;
• IATA, ICAO and Alliance Vanille reflect Air Seychelles growing recognition in the world of aviation as a remarkable story.
With regard to some of the specific comments within the letter by Mrs Amesbury, the following are actual facts:
• In January this year, Air Seychelles employees were awarded a 13th month salary bonus.
• In addition over 80% of staff qualified for a further salary increase based on 2015 performance.
• No pilot employed by Air Seychelles has left Air Seychelles during the last 12 months.
• Carrying over 9,000 residents per month domestically between Mahé and Praslin clearly shows Air Seychelles is focused on local community as well as supporting growth of the tourism industry on Praslin and Seychelles in general.
Air Seychelles recognises the importance of customer service. Having introduced the right technology, the airline is well equipped to increase its focus on delivering the best possible service levels to all its guests.
We continue to focus on On Time Performance, staff engagement and customer satisfaction.
Despite the very competitive external trading circumstances globally, Air Seychelles has achieved significant growth and continues to invest in its employees and infrastructure to enable future success.”

Eleven Air Seychelles cabin crew have graduated from the world-class Etihad Airways Training Academy in Abu Dhabi.
The 14th group to undergo training at the premiere academy were personally congratulated yesterday by Roy Kinnear, chief executive of Air Seychelles, and Francisca Moonsammy, head of cabin operations of Air Seychelles.
During the last six weeks, the group received state-of-the-art training on the Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft types which covered topics such as safety and emergency procedures, service and aviation security.
Mr Kinnear said: “We are extremely proud of our talented cabin crew for completing one of the most demanding courses in Airbus service and safety training in the industry.
“The fact that Air Seychelles has won the World Travel Awards accolade for best cabin crew in the region for three consecutive years is proof of the professionalism of our crew and a testament to the quality of training at the Etihad Airways Training Academy.
“With their smiles, warmth and friendliness, our all-Seychellois crew embody the ‘Creole Spirit’ of Air Seychelles and I am confident this group will make the journey to our islands unforgettable for many visitors.”
Ms Moonsammy said: “We are delighted to welcome this group of graduates to the Air Seychelles cabin crew family, who have a glowing reputation among air travellers for their passion and dedication to the job.”
The newly graduated cabin crew are Caroline Jumeau, Elaine Pillay, Amy Victor, Ingrid Bouchereau, Elsa-Marie Laurence, Ryan Bonne, Dominique Rose, Manette Gabriel, Salman Camille, Tira Louange and Linne Freminot, who was crowned Miss Seychelles in 2015.
Ms Louange said: “Going through cabin crew training in Abu Dhabi was a great learning experience that equipped me with the right skills and tools for looking after Air Seychelles guests.
“The training emphasised that being a cabin crew is an opportunity to leave guests with a positive impression of Seychelles and act as an ambassador to our country. In addition, my knowledge of Mandarin will contribute to more personalised services on the recently launched Air Seychelles Beijing flights.”
A total of 205 Air Seychelles cabin crew have now undergone safety and service training with Etihad Airways, a strategic partner of the Seychelles-based carrier.

Air Seychelles has two new Seychellois captains

Air Seychelles has two new Seychellois captains. First Officers Christopher Lespoir and Charles Elizabeth have been promoted to captain after undergoing simulator training at the Etihad Academy in Abu Dhabi and practical flights on the Airbus A320 which they are now going to command.
They were presented with their captain badges by Air Seychelles chief executive (CEO) Roy Kinnear in a brief ceremony at the Seychelles International Airport yesterday afternoon.
The ceremony took place in the presence of the national airline's general manager for operations Christophe Schippel, head of flight operations Donal Young and members of the captains' families.
Captain Lespoir, 38, joined Air Seychelles in 1998 as a Twin Otter pilot before moving as co-pilot on the Boeing 767. This is what he had to say after receiving his four captain's bars:
"It has been a long, tough but worthy journey with a lot of work. At the same time it was a two-way journey as on one side there was our dedication and motivation and on the other there was the opportunity offered by Air Seychelles and the Seychelles government. It is a journey you have once in your life time but once you go through it, it is rewarding."
Captain Elizabeth, 34, followed the same path since 2004. The following were his comments:
"I wanted to be a pilot since I was two years old. This was maybe because my parents worked at the airport where I usually accompanied them. They joke that even before I could talk, I talked about aeroplanes. And when you start flying, you dream of flying big jets."
Both captains were thankful to Air Seychelles and the government for accompanying them during their career and their families for their support.
As for CEO Kinnear, he commented that more Seychellois pilots in the captain ranks of Air Seychelles means that the company's advance planning strategy which he described as "the most important process for ensuring the steady growth of our national airline" has been proven right.
"With good advance planning and continuous investment in training of our pilots, Air Seychelles will be proudly presenting further Seychellois pilots and captains," he confidently added.
Air Seychelles currently employs a total of 93 pilots, 56 on its jet fleet and 37 on Twin Otters. There are 33 Seychellois pilots on the jet fleet while 32 others are flying Twin Otters.
After accumulating 500 hours flying time on the A320, Captains Lespoir and Elizabeth will be able to obtain what is known as a cross crew qualification which will permit them to also fly the A330.

• As Seychelles celebrates 45 years of aviation on aviatrix’ 70th birthday!


Aggie Dent, who was the first aviatrix in Seychelles, has been welcomed back to the islands by Air Seychelles to enjoy her 70th birthday in the warmth of the people and sunshine during the cold South African winter.
Born Robinson and commonly known as Aggie, she is now a great example of the role of ladies in the aviation industry.
With over 40 years of experience, she learned to fly at the young age of 16 in a wood and canvas Piper Cub in the Kenya highlands, Aggie went solo in only 6 hours.
She then did her instructors rating in Thruxton, Wiltshire, England, and in 1965 at the age of 19 she was a qualified instructor so she went back to Kenya to teach at the Aero Club at Wilson Airport, Nairobi.
She came to Seychelles in 1972 to set up the Seychelles Aero club, with the late Mike Savy as chairman, who founded the aircraft with 8 other founder members.
Aggie Robinson was the Club instructor for seven years, then became the private pilot license (PPL) examiner, which meant she could test and give licenses.
One of the eldest Seychellois pilot, Francois Jackson, was a student of Aggie back in 1975, where she taught him to fly on a Cessna 152 aerobat and exactly 40 years ago he qualified for the PPL on July 21, 1976.
Captain Jackson later became Air Seychelles’ chief pilot but he is now a line pilot.
During their reunion recently, Aggie presented her past student with an outstanding achievement award for his 40 years contributing towards aviation and recalled their memories from 40 years ago when Aggie was Captain Jackson's instructor.

He said it has been an enjoyable 40 years and to him flying is a passion so it will be a shame when it comes to an end.
“If it’s not a passion don’t go there (to be a pilot) and that I believe is the major problem in aviation today in the world as it has expanded so fast and because they need pilots so badly, not only pilots per se but passion is not necessarily the guide,” he said.
In terms of family life Captain Jackson said a strong marriage or a very understanding family is needed because as a pilot you are away from home for a very long time and a lot of sacrifices has to be made.
He said there are prospects for young Seychellois in the aviation industry and this is the time to go for it.
Career defining moments for Aggie while in Seychelles was in August 1975 when the Ero schooner disappeared while heading for Praslin. She flew out to help find it and managed to save the life of a lone lady who had veered away from the capsized boat in the rough seas.
Aggie was the first person to land on Denis Island in the C152, when the airstrip was only half complete in March 1977.
She also worked in South Africa where she maintained fighter jets owned and operated by civilians in Thunder city, Cape Town and she ferried two Cessnas from Cape Town to Addis Ababa in 2007 and again in 2008. Her last flight was in March 2008.
Another amazing moment for Aggie was on Independence Day June 29, 1976 when she did an aerobatics display over Victoria. The cloud cover was low and as she did loops and spins over the crowds near the old Port, the crowds below her parted and ran in all directions.
She eventually pulled out at 20 ft altitude, between the masts of two yachts moored at the yacht club.
“Aviation in Seychelles has done very well in the past 45 years,” Aggie observed. “When the airline first started it was only one flight per week and people used to come down to look at the aircraft during landing and takeoff and it was a national excitement. Today I can’t believe the number of airlines that comes in,” she remarked.
Aggie said she could have progressed in the industry but she wanted to impart onto others what she had learned. Becoming an instructor to her was a natural thing as her parents were both teachers.
She wanted to fly for as long as she can remember and now she terribly misses flying as a pilot. She said she is a terrible passenger as she always wants to go upfront and tell them how to do things properly.
Her message to girls or young women who are thinking about prospects in flying is: “I did it at 16, you can to and girls can make better pilots than men since we are better at multi tasking.”
Aggie was accompanied on her visit by her daughter Shirley Jooste and sister Mia Dunford.

Air Seychelles captain Aubrey Quatre dies in fatal ground accident

Aubrey with father Purdy Quatre on the day he gained his command on the Twin Otter in April 2015Air Seychelles captain Aubrey Quatre died yesterday after being involved in a fatal ground accident which happened at around 11.30am at the Domestic Terminal of the Seychelles Airport.
The Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) said it was informed at 11.33am of the incident involving an Air Seychelles staff and a Twin Otter plane.
Paramedics’ help was requested from the Airport Fire and Rescue Services (AFRS) watch room to help the person involved in the accident and three paramedics were sent on scene one minute later.
According to a statement released by Air Seychelles yesterday, captain Quatre, 27, was an experienced pilot on Air Seychelles Twin Otter fleet and had been with the company since October 15, 2012 and gained his command on the Twin Otter in April 2015. He was born on September 25, 1988.
The statement added that no other staff or guests were involved.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the staff member’s family, friends and immediate colleagues. We are a close-knit family at Air Seychelles and we share the devastation of this tragic event. Counselling services are being made available at head quarters for those affected by this incident. An investigation has been launched and we are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities,” writes the statement.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs and Transport Minister Joël Morgan, has also ordered an immediate investigation into the incident as per established protocols in place with the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA).
“Air Seychelles and the SCAA are both entities who pride themselves in operating a safe working environment for passengers and of course staff within all points of operations at our airport. We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our prayers and sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” Minister Morgan wrote in a communiqué.
“We fully appreciate that this was a traumatic event for staff and that we will ensure that distressed employees receive full support and counselling where needed.
“To the customers of Air Seychelles who may have been witness to this or who have heard of this event after the fact, please bear with us during this tragic time for all employees of both the SCAA and Air Seychelles. Rest assured that our winning team, who are an extended family, will continue to do their very best, despite it all.
“Safety remains our priority and my initiating an immediate investigation at this time forms part of procedures to ensure that overall operations remain as they have been to date, a safe experience for all, ” Minister Morgan said.
On behalf of the department of transport, the SCAA and all affiliated departments, and as well in his capacity as chairman of Air Seychelles board, Minister Morgan also sent his condolences to the family of the employee who lost his life yesterday.
As a result of the tragic fatal accident, Air Seychelles suspended all domestic operations for the remainder of the day, yesterday, to ease the ongoing internal and external investigations.
Domestic operations will resume as per normal schedule today.

The airline also helped passengers with new travel arrangement and did everything to minimise the inconvenience resulting from the disruption of their flights to and from Praslin.
On the day he became a captain, Quatre said: “I have worked very hard to become a captain and can say that one of my childhood dreams has come true. It’s a very proud day for me and I would like to extend my gratitude to my colleagues at Air Seychelles for the opportunities and training I have received. I look forward to gaining more flying experience and progressing to the Airbus fleet in due course.”
Quatre lived at Ma Constance and had been flying with Air Seychelles since 2012. He completed secondary school studies at the English River school, before taking A-level examinations at the School of Advanced Level Studies. After graduating, he worked as an Assistant Air Traffic Controller at the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority for two years. In 2010, he enrolled at the 43rd Air School in South Africa to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot, where he undertook an intensive aviation course before applying for a position at Air Seychelles.

(Seychelles News Agency) - Air Seychelles is the highest ranking airline in the Indian Ocean region, according to the Skytrax World Airline Award for 2016.
Seychelles' national carrier came second for Best Airline in Africa for 2016 with neighbouring island nation Mauritius third and Air Austral from Reunion, a French department in the region, in 10th place.
Air Seychelles chief executive Roy Kinnear welcomed the announcement, describing the ranking as a seal of recognition by people and organisations outside the airline.
“To receive such a ranking is truly acknowledgement that Air Seychelles is doing a great job and delivering in many aspects that receive open appreciation, awareness, attention and applause,” said Kinnear.
Kinnear added that the company is extremely satisfied with the ranking as the airline faces tough competition in the Indian Ocean and Africa regions.
“Competition in the Indian Ocean and Africa as a whole is very strong and for a boutique airline that we are, we can be very proud of the awards received so far.”
Kinnear added, “We should not forget that as a small sized airline we are competing against much bigger organisations and to receive such a ranking in Africa is surely a cause for celebration.”
The South African Airways was voted the best airline in Africa for 2016. The rankings gave the best airline award to Emirates, ahead of Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines. In the top 100 airlines, Air Seychelles retained its 63rd place.
The Skytrax World Airline Award is seen as the Oscars of the aviation industry and is voted by airline customers around the world. Established in 1989, Skytrax is an airline consulting and rating company based in London, United Kingdom.
This is not the first time that the national airline of Seychelles, a group of islands in the western Indian Ocean, has gotten high recognition for its services. In April this year, Air Seychelles scooped accolades in all four available categories for airlines at the World Travel Awards: Best Business Class, Best Cabin Crew, Leading Indian Ocean’s Airline and for the first time in its history Best Economy Class.
Kinnear said Air Seychelles today is “a self-sufficient, sustainably profitable airline with a structured development plan which allows us to grow both internationally and domestically.”
On the question of winning the top airline spot one day, Kinnear said that while the airline will continue to invest in technology, product and services, the people involved at both ends -- service delivery and clients -- are the deciding factors.
“Going forward, we will continue our strong focus on continuously improving customer service and focusing on how our people can improve the journey satisfaction for all our valued guests,” he said.
Air Seychelles, established in 1978, currently offers international flights to Abu Dhabi, Antananarivo, Beijing, Johannesburg, Mauritius, Mumbai and Paris, as well as domestic services to other islands.
The airline maintains a strategic partnership with Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways, which ranked sixth among the top 100.

Air Seychelles will support 7,800 jobs and add US$ 235 million to Seychelles’ Economy in 2016

The FINANCIAL -- Air Seychelles, the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles, will support 7,800 jobs across Seychelles and contribute US$ 235 million to the national economy in 2016, according to the latest forecasts by the UK-based global consultancy Oxford Economics.

It is also estimated by Oxford Economics that Air Seychelles will provide 2,200 people with employment and add US$ 65 million to the Seychelles’ economy through its core operations including expenditures on fuel, maintenance costs and local Seychellois suppliers. Breaking the research down further, this includes approximately 800 direct jobs at Air Seychelles in Seychelles; 800 indirect jobs supported by the airline’s procurement of goods and services, and 600 additional jobs supported by staff spending their wages in Seychelles.

The study goes on to state that in 2016 the airline is expected to carry close to 549,000 passengers, of which approximately 348,000 passengers will travel to and from Seychelles.  Among these, some 106,000 guests will be international visitors into Seychelles and will predominantly be from Europe, Africa and Asia, whose tourism-related spending on accommodation, food, and leisure activities will amount to US$ 170 million, supporting some 5,600 jobs.

Air Seychelles’ domestic services, an integral part of the Seychelles’ aviation network, will carry 201,000 passengers in 2016 on scheduled flights to and from Praslin and charter flights to other islands in the Archipelago.

In addition to the above, the economic benefits of enhanced air connectivity between Seychelles and the rest of the world, as a result of Air Seychelles’ operations, has been valued by Oxford Economics at US$ 35 million this year, representing 2.3 per cent of the national GDP and equivalent to 1,000 jobs.

Joel Morgan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Transport and Chairman of Air Seychelles, said: “The national airline is one of the key pillars of economic development of Seychelles, and in this sense the success of Air Seychelles directly contributes to the development of the whole country.

“The Government of the Republic of Seychelles led by President James Michel has continuously supported the implementation of comprehensive transformations since the initiation of the strategic partnership with Etihad Airways and the results are proving that the airline’s management is applying correct measures.”

James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Air Seychelles’ operations and wide economic footprint through Seychelles have a strong positive knock-on effect on the national economy and, as the report shows, opened up thousands of jobs in Seychelles.

“Air Seychelles is a successful and profitable business, making a significant difference to the lives of many Seychellois and their families.  For the Etihad Aviation Group, it remains a gateway to the Indian Ocean and as a key partner, we remain committed to working together to strengthen its position further.”

‘Summer Extravaganza’ promotion - Air Seychelles rewards 70 winners

Air Seychelles has officially rewarded the winners of its ‘Summer Extravanganza’ promotion that ended with resounding success, capping off a busy summer season.
The special promotion saw 70 prizes up for grabs through July and August, including air tickets, seat upgrades to business class, airport lounge passes and duty free vouchers through a raffle draw, and was met with an extremely positive response from travellers in Seychelles.
The ‘Summer Extravanganza’ promotion ran from July 15 to August 31, and to stand a chance to win, guests had to book tickets and travel on any international flight with Air Seychelles, as well as sign up to the carrier’s frequent flyer programme, Etihad Guest.
The winners were announced in a special ceremony that took place at the carrier’s luxurious VIP Lounge at the Seychelles International Airport, Pointe Larue in the presence of chief executive Roy Kinnear, along with other high officials, and the winners.
Mr Kinnear pointed out that Air Seychelles wanted to reward the people that flew with the national airline between July and August.
“In August only Air Seychelles made history by recording the busiest month since being in operation 38 years ago. We always strive to deliver a great service for all our passengers along with the staff,” he said.
The following prizes were up for grabs – five pairs of Business Class tickets to any destination on the Air Seychelles network; 10 pairs of Economy Class tickets to any destination on the air Seychelles network; 10 tickets on flights between Mahé and Praslin; 10 pairs of Business Class upgrade on any international flight; 10 pairs of passes to the premium lounge at the Seychelles International Airport; five pairs of passes to the VIP Lounge at the Seychelles International Airport and 20 vouchers for a 25 percent discount at Trezor, the Air Seychelles duty free shop.

Air Seychelles yesterday welcomed the first of two new Twin Otter DH-6-400 aircraft into its domestic fleet.

The new D-6-H-400 turboprop aircraft has been named Isle of Praslin, after the second largest island in Seychelles. It will be used in the Air Seychelles domestic fleet along with Isle of Farquhar another D-6-400 turboprop which will be joining Air Seychelles later.

Ⓢ The question on everyone’s mind is, why suspend the flights to Dusseldorf? What kind of business stunt was that?
Ⓡ We looked at data - we looked at Switzerland, Germany, France, and Germany came out as the next opportune market to expand into. There clearly was market research done. If we take a look at the recent visitor arrivals, it is proven correct. Germany is right up there.
Ⓢ This is why people are so confused. Could you explain what factors are at play with this decision?
Ⓡ It was right to go after Germany at that point in time. The world is a different place now than it was 12 months ago. Fuel prices have significantly increased year after year; it is not the friend of the airlines at the moment. Then in quarter 4 last year, we had Turkish and Qatar airlines coming in. We have an open skies policy and I understand that. But we have to bear in mind that for the big guns like Turkish, Qatar, Emirates, meaning Dubai, Istanbul, Abu Dhabi - they will have 20 to 40 flights feeding into those which connect all to one flight going to Seychelles. All they probably need is five people or ten people of one of those connecting flights from Scandinavia, or Russia and they can get a full flight coming into Seychelles.
