Air Seychelles picks up SCCI Award for Innovation

14-December-2017

Air Seychelles has won the ‘Innovative Product’ award for the second year running at the annual Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) business awards ceremony.
Held on Saturday night at the Eden Bleu Hotel, the prestigious event gathered key executives, entrepreneurs and other business leaders from the private sector to celebrate achievements in 2017.
The award recognises the airline’s commitment to digital transformation, especially the development of its digital marketing platforms, e-commerce campaigns and website on airseychelles.com
Roy Kinnear, the airline’s chief executive, said: “2017 has been a year of significant digital innovation at Air Seychelles and we are honoured to once again be recognised for our initiatives by the SCCI.
“The digital revolution has brought about enormous change in air travel, from the way people search for flights online to how they pre-select their seats, and Air Seychelles is committed to staying at the forefront of this change to ensure the future growth of the business and to provide a superior flying experience to its guests.”
Over the past year Air Seychelles has continued to expand its product offering on airseychelles.com by enabling guests to conveniently purchase additional services, such as Fast Track, and personalise their travel by booking extra legroom seats or buying access to the Salon Vallée De Mai airport lounge.
In addition, the airline has continued to strengthen its online brand presence and drive revenue growth through better-optimised digital advertising campaigns, more visibility on travel metasearch engines and email remarketing efforts.

Remco Althuis is Air Seychelles’ interim chief executive

20-December-2017
Remco Althuis, Air Seychelles’ interim chief executiveRemco Althuis has been named Air Seychelles’ interim chief executive, succeeding Roy Kinnear.
A communiqué from Air Seychelles writes that Mr Althuis joins the national carrier from Etihad Airways, where he held the position of regional general manager Europe, with responsibility for the airline’s commercial activities in 17 European markets.
Speaking in the National Assembly late yesterday, Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine Minister Maurice Loustau-Lalanne said Mr Althuis, 48, will head Air Seychelles for a maximum six months until a new chief executive is chosen by Etihad Airways among 10 candidates.
Meanwhile, Minister Loustau-Lalanne has said they await the final results of the Etihad Airways Group board meeting held in Abu Dhabi on December 10, 2017 during which Air Seychelles put forward a number of propositions, but confirmed that the national airline will become a regional airline in the future.
The minister also confirmed that in March or April next year, there will be a restructuring process within Air Seychelles, meaning some of the 850 staff will be made redundant, but all will depend on discussions the company is having with Fiji Airways to rent one of its A330 Boeings.
Minister Loustau-Lalanne explained that although Air Seychelles holds a 60% share in the deal with Etihad Airways which holds a 40% share, it is the Abu Dhabi-based airline that manages Air Seychelles and decides who should be Air Seychelles’ chief executive.
He also confirmed that no Seychellois has applied for post of chief executive before adding that Mr Kinnear is currently in Abu Dhabi finalising some details before he leaves Air Seychelles on December 31, 2017.
Back to the Air Seychelles communiqué, it adds that Mr Althuis has also held senior management positions at Air France-KLM and KLM during an aviation career spanning more than 20 years.
Mr Althuis said: “I am honoured and delighted to join Air Seychelles, and with the support of the shareholders, look forward to driving the strategic development of the business. Like all airlines in the commercial aviation industry, we continue to face significant challenges. However, I am confident that together with the Air Seychelles workforce, we’ll continue to enhance the business and spread the Creole spirit.”
He started his career at KLM where he worked across various functions including sales and distribution, revenue management, marketing and e-commerce.
Mr Althuis joined Etihad Airways in 2012 as general manager for China, overseeing the expansion of the airline’s route network in the region and driving revenue growth in Greater China, before moving up to the regional general manager Europe position.
He holds an MBA from the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University in the Netherlands.
Board members of both stakeholders, the government of Seychelles and Etihad Airways, have welcomed Mr Althuis’ appointment.
Jean Weeling-Lee, chairman of Air Seychelles, said: “Remco is a highly talented executive with a wealth of experience in aviation and a proven track record in leadership roles. His extensive skillset will be crucial to ensuring that Air Seychelles continues to develop in ways that achieve our commercial objective of sustainable profitability.
“I would also like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Roy Kinnear, who has made an enormous contribution in developing the business. We wish him all the best in the next stage of his career.”

This Tread apply equally to the Emir of Dubai and his knowledge of my person workings and capacity and the how he comports - we kindly ask him and his officials to get a number of large pipes and fill them with camel dung/dry and smoke then after reading this comment -

The below is an extract form Wikipedia and the information is very minimal and lack a great deal of accuracy.

Sergio Orlandini retired in 1987 and was succeeded as president of KLM by Jan de Soet.[23] In 1986, the Dutch government's shareholding in KLM was reduced to 54.8 percent.[9] It was expected that this share would be further reduced during the decade.[9] The Boeing 747-400 was introduced into KLM's fleet in June 1989.[10]

With the liberalization of the European market, KLM started developing its hub at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol by feeding its network with traffic from affiliated airlines.[9] As part of its development of a worldwide network, KLM acquired a 20% stake in Northwest Airlines in July 1989.[10] In 1990, KLM carried 16,000,000 passengers. KLM president Jan de Soet retired at the end of 1990 and was succeeded in 1991 by Pieter Bouw.[24] In December 1991, KLM was the first European airline to introduce a frequent flyer loyalty program, which was called Flying Dutchman.[10]

Joint venture[edit]
In January 1993, the United States Department of Transportation granted KLM and Northwest Airlines anti-trust immunity, which allowed them to intensify their partnership.[10] As of September 1993, the airlines operated their flights between the United States and Europe as part of a joint venture.[10] In March 1994, KLM and Northwest Airlines introduced World Business Class on intercontinental routes.[10] KLM's stake in Northwest Airlines was increased to 25% in 1994.[9]

KLM introduced the Boeing 767-300ER in July 1995.[10] In January 1996, KLM acquired a 26% share in Kenya Airways, the flag-carrier airline of Kenya.[10] In 1997, Pieter Bouw resigned as president of KLM and was succeeded by Leo van Wijk.[25] In August 1998, KLM repurchased all regular shares from the Dutch government to make KLM a private company.[10] On 1 November 1999, KLM founded AirCares, a communication and fundraising platform supporting worthy causes and focusing on underprivileged children.[10]

KLM renewed its intercontinental fleets by replacing the Boeing 767s, Boeing 747-300s, and eventually the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, with Boeing 777-200ERs and Airbus A330-200s. Some 747s were withdrawn from service first. The MD-11s remained in service until October 2014.[26][27] The first Boeing 777 was received on 25 October 2003, while the first Airbus A330-200 was introduced on 25 August 2005.[10]

Air France–KLM merger[edit]
On 30 September 2003, Air France and KLM agreed to a merger plan in which Air France and KLM would become subsidiaries of a holding company called Air France–KLM. Both airlines would retain their own brands, and both Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol would become key hubs.[28] In February 2004, the European Commission and United States Department of Justice approved the proposed merger of the airlines.[29][30] In April 2004, an exchange offer in which KLM shareholders exchanged their KLM shares for Air France shares took place.[31] Since 5 May 2004, Air France–KLM has been listed on the Euronext exchanges in Paris, Amsterdam and New York.[32] In September 2004, the merger was completed by creation of the Air France–KLM holding company.[32] The merger resulted in the world's largest airline group and should have led to an estimated annual cost-saving of between €400 million and €500 million.[33]

It did not appear that KLM's longstanding joint venture with Northwest Airlines—which merged with Delta Air Lines in 2008—was affected by the merger with Air France. KLM and Northwest joined the SkyTeam alliance in September 2004. Also in 2004, senior management came under fire for providing itself with controversial bonuses after the merger with Air France, while 4,500 jobs were lost at KLM. After external pressure, management gave up on these bonuses.[34]

In March 2007, KLM started to use the Amadeus reservation system, along with partner Kenya Airways. After 10 years as president of the airline, Leo van Wijk resigned from his position and was succeeded by Peter Hartman.[35]

2010s[edit]

KLM was the last airline to operate the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 in passenger service, retiring the type in 2014
Beginning in September 2010, KLM integrated the passenger division of Martinair into KLM, transferring all personnel and routes. By November 2011, Martinair consisted of only the cargo and maintenance division.[36] In March 2011, KLM and InselAir reached an agreement for mutual cooperation on InselAir destinations, thus expanding its passenger services. Beginning 27 March 2011, KLM passengers could fly to all InselAir destinations through InselAir's hubs in Curacao and Sint Maarten.[37][38] This cooperation was extended to a codeshare agreement in 2012.[39]

On 20 February 2013, KLM announced that Peter Hartman would resign as president and CEO of KLM on 1 July 2013. He was succeeded by Camiel Eurlings. Hartman remained employed by the company until he retired on 1 January 2014.[40] On 15 October 2014, KLM announced that Eurlings, in joint consultation with the supervisory board, had decided to immediately resign as president and CEO. As of this date, he was succeeded by Pieter Elbers.[3]

Airport runway too narrow for diverted Airbus A380

19-May-2018
Seychelles International Airport’s runway is too narrow to take an Airbus A380, hence an Emirates flight that could not land in Mauritius with 500 passengers recently had to fly all the way to Tanzania.
Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) said this in response to enquiries by this newspaper, as people including reporters in many countries wondered why the flight did not come to Seychelles or some of the other airports in the Indian Ocean or eastern Africa.
A regional publication which sells millions of its copies speculated that Seychelles may have been considered too close to Mauritius and strong winds could have been the main consideration for the decision to take the three and a half hour diversion flight to Dar es Salaam.

Letter to the Editor - Thank you for truth about runway

21-May-2018
I wish to commend you for your approach in news handling, without taking sides or seeming to cover up even when hiding things is not necessary.
I read with interest your Saturday May 19 analytical article about the status of the Seychelles International Airport and the truth that it cannot take an Airbus A380 contrary to earlier suggestions where we even have pictures of an A380 in Air Seychelles Livery. If we acquired one where would it be landing, or would it be flying around the world without ever coming home like our tankers?
Allow me to commend the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority for coming out with the truth.
I am not saying that the government has not done much to improve our aviation infrastructure, but your article entitled ‘Airport runway too narrow for diverted A380’ strongly showed we need to do more. We need to expand the airport like the many other countries around us who are doing so according to your newspaper.
We are leaders in tourism and we cannot afford to have visitors overflying us heading for other destinations.
On the same breath, let me say we need to open up more and tell the truth yet further. For example, there is no need to show that tourists are safe from this and that and even exaggerate.
The damage caused by giving false sense of security if something happens is far worse than if we tell the truth and lose one or two cowardly visitors.
While at it, while we must maintain Seychelles exclusivity, I hope we will know soon enough if and when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex come here for their honeymoon.
By the way I was happy to know why the A380 has so many wheels!
Please keep up the good work, Mr Editor.

Air Seychelles celebrates 40 years in the sky

Air Seychelles which was established 1978 ventured into long-haul services in 1983. (Air Seychelles)

(Seychelles News Agency) - As the Seychelles’ national airline celebrates four decades of existence, the company has organised a series of activities for school children, staff and the general public.

To kick off the five-day celebration, Air Seychelles on Monday welcomed 120 students from Baie Lazare and Takamaka primary school on an aircraft visit at the Seychelles International Airport. The students had the chance to experience in-flight products and services and met with two jet fleet pilots who relayed their roles and responsibilities.

The chief executive of Air Seychelles, Remco Althuis, said that such an activity contributes towards the education of children in Seychelles, and the schools’ development programme.

Air Seychelles was established on October 26, 1978, as a domestic airline, venturing into long-haul services five years later. In 1983, the government bought a Douglas DC 10 aircraft and the airline started its first weekly flight to London via Frankfurt.

During the 40 years, the company has acquired aircraft such as the Boeing 767-200 ER, Airbus A330-200 and Airbus A320, contributing to the growth of the airline.

Today, Air Seychelles offers flights to Abu Dhabi, Johannesburg, Mauritius and Mumbai, complementing its domestic services. Next year, the company looks to increase the frequency to certain destinations and acquire more modern aircraft, including the Airbus A320neo.

“We will continue to focus on the key projects as part of the transformation plan as we strive to innovate our business in this challenging industry to ensure we maintain the level of service we are proud of,” said Althuis.

To further celebrate the 40th anniversary of Air Seychelles, the company hosted 24 school children with a 15-minute scenic flight over Praslin, the second most populated island.
