Grande figure chez les Noirs américains, sa carrière a inspiré le film Les figures de l'ombre, sorti en 2016, adapté du livre de Margot Lee Shetterly, qui racontait l'apport trop souvent ignoré des femmes noires dans la conquête américaine de l'espace.
