Margaret River family-run olive oil business, Vasse Virgin, wins legal battle against Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin empire

A MARGARET River family-run olive oil business has won its David and Goliath legal battle against Sir Richard Branson’s mighty empire — over the use of the word “virgin”.

Vasse Virgin, an olive oil food and skin care business, were left flabbergasted when Branson’s Virgin Enterprises Limited (VEL) challenged the family-run brand’s right to the continued use of its name and logo during a bid to refresh its trademark in 2012.

The global group argued it should have exclusive rights to the word given its extensive worldwide use of it. VEL also said Australian consumers might get confused over whether the two brands were associated.
