Seychelles’ position on Chagos UN Resolution

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution entitled ‘Advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the legal consequences of the separation of the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius in 1965’ in its 83rd Plenary Meeting of the 73rd Session General Assembly on May 22, 2019.

Seychelles was among the 116 countries who voted in favour of the resolution.

Minister Counsellor, Andre Butler-Payette who is based at the Seychelles embassy in the United States of America, delivered a statement at the UNGA on behalf of the Seychelles’ government.

“Having experienced colonisation and having gone through the subsequent process of decolonisation leading to independence, the Republic of Seychelles is of the firm view that all peoples have a right to self-determination under customary international law and that territory cannot be excised without the consent of the people of an independent nation. This binding obligation was determined by the ICJ,” said Mr Butler Payette.

Apart from the countries who voted in favour, there were 56 abstentions and only a minority of 6 countries who voted against the resolution.

The six nations are the United Kingdom, United States, Israel, Australia, Hungary and the Maldives.

Les descendants des Chagossiens vivant en exil en Grande-Bretagne sont dans la crainte de menace de déportation. Le dernier cas en date est celui d’un jeune Chagossien de 22 ans, habitant Crawley à Londres depuis bientôt sept ans et dont la mère détient la nationalité britannique de par les accords intervenus précédemment. Le fait que ce jeune homme ne soit pas né en Grande-Bretagne le place dans une situation des plus embarrassantes.
