Death of the 18th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne

The 18th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, Michael Fergus Bowes-Lyon, died on Saturday in London at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer.

He was a first cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth, his father Fergus was one of the Queen Mother’s nephews (Michael served as one of the Queen Mother’s Pages during the 1970s). Michael was born in 1957 and studied at Eton College and the University of Aberdeen before attending military training at Sandhurst. He was a Captain in the Scots Guard and also served as a Conservative member of the House of Lords.

The Earl was married three times: first to Isobel Weatherall, then to Dr Damaris Stuart-William and lastly to Karen Baxter. He had four children, all sons, through his marriages: Simon, John, George and Toby.
