One of the ways in which the Courts ensure that the integrity of its proceedings are free from external influence is through the sub judice rule.
In brief, the rule regulates the publication of matters which are under consideration by the court. In general, matters are considered sub judice once legal proceedings have commenced, an arrest would suffice. The underlying reason for the rule is to uphold the integrity of court proceedings by preventing acts intended to interfere with pending or imminent court proceedings. Deliberate breach of the sub judice rule is typically an act in contempt of court or a statutory offence in particular circumstances.

There is no hard and fast rule on what actions can be seen as contempt of court. Unexhaustive lists may be found through reliable (online) legal sources. If the publication or broadcast is made with the aim to influence public perception (including but not limited to the judge or a jury as the case may be) then that would fall foul of the rule. There is no public interest defence to the sub judice rule. If proceedings become tainted due to the breach of the rule, it may lead to a mistrial, which would in itself not be in the public interest.

To a certain extent, the rule has been been codified in section 114 of the Penal Code which concerns offences related to judicial proceedings. For example, section 114(1)(d) specifically makes it an offence to make use of any speech or writing "capable of prejudicing any person in favour of or against any parties to such proceeding, or calculated to lower the authority of any such person before whom such proceeding is being had or taken".
Section 114(3) then adds that "The provisions of this section shall be deemed to be addition to and not in derogation from the power of the Supreme Court to punish for contempt of court." Making a clear link to the powers of the court to hold persons in contempt.
