Anger at ‘sick’ BBC over story about killing Margaret Thatcher

The tale, by prize-winning author Dame Hilary Mantel, will be read next month by actress Dame Harriet Walter for Radio 4’s Book At Bedtime slot.

The Assassination Of Margaret Thatcher tells how a middle-class housewife becomes complicit in an IRA hitman’s plot to shoot dead the former Prime Minister.

Conservative peer Lord Tebbit, who served in Lady Thatcher’s government and whose wife was paralysed when the IRA tried to murder the PM at the 1984 party conference in Brighton, said: “It is a sick book from a sick mind – and it’s being promoted by a sick broadcasting corporation.” He challenged director general Lord Hall to justify his “gigantic” £450,000 salary by stopping the broadcast. And he called on the BBC to say how much it paid for rights to the book.
