Serge Lebrasse, a legend of Mauritian Sega, has passed away, and once again, the island of Mauritius must mourn.
I first met Serge in 2016 when I captured his photograph for my Faces of Mauritius series. Welcoming me into his home, he told me the incredible story of his life and the many joys and tribulations it brought him. What I remember most from our first meeting was what an extraordinary life he had led.
His passion for the people and culture of his island seemed boundless, with performance seeming to run in his blood. True to form, he spontaneously performed at the opening of my gallery a few years ago, a true honour that I will never forget.
