Messlatte: Die Benchmark Heinz Fischer

Austrian election: why is it significant and what does it mean for EU policy on borders, migrants and refugees? Empty Far-Right close to seizing Austrian presidency

Far-Right close to seizing Austrian presidency

The far-Right appeared close to seizing the Austrian presidency on Sunday night, in an election result that will send shockwaves through Europe.

Norbert Hofer, the gun-toting candidate of the Freedom Party (FPÖ), won almost twice as many votes as his nearest rival,  according to exit polls.

With just over half the votes counted, Mr Hofer was far out in front with 35 per cent.

The result could spell the end of the two-party system that has dominated Austria since the Second World War, with their candidates beaten into fourth and fifth place.

Comment - This is the current situation in EU, those we have addressed there are were other high mechanism which get apply for the good and whatever function of EU, yet the media what they write. Twelve years ago the coming to Office of the outgoing President of Austria - there are still a few individuals in the world who know aware what we are talking about, the mechanism was applied and the election of the outgoing president once in Office his distancing from such notion. It does not encourage future interventions as such the development of high negativity across EU before that mechanism was applied to diffuse and water down some of the extreme debacles and ideas - since our reluctant to become involved - the outcome of current Europe , the many past head of Stats in Europe we have work these issues, their government and individual to say it did /does not exist would be wanton lies/utter dishonesty. Much more in Austria the many articles we have written and our families, acquaintance there, their comportment, beside the invitation which had been extended to us for the special seminar - now the outcome.

Austrian government in shock as far-right triumphs

Published on Monday, 25 April, 2016 at 07:13
(AFP) Austria's government was licking its wounds Monday after a historic debacle that saw the opposition anti-immigrant far-right triumph in a presidential ballot two years before the next scheduled general election.

According to preliminary results, Norbert Hofer of the Freedom Party (FPOe) came a clear first with 36 percent of the vote, while candidates from the two governing parties failed to even make it into a runoff on May 22.

The result means that for the first time since 1945, Austria will not have a president backed by either Chancellor Werner Faymann's Social Democrats (SPOe) or their centre-right coalition partners the People's Party (OeVP).

"This is the beginning of a new political era," FPOe leader Heinz-Christian Strache said after what constituted the best-ever result at federal level for the former party of the late Joerg Haider, calling it a "historic result".

The centre-right OeVP's candidate Andreas Khol came equal fourth with 11 percent, level with the SPOe's Rudolf Hundstorfer.
