Voters urged to ensure they are registered
Voters urged to ensure they are registered
16-May-2016
The Association for Rights, Information & Democracy (Arid) is urging all young people of Seychelles with voting age (18 years and over) to register themselves and ensure that they are given a receipt/registration slip confirming their registration on the voter’s roll.
Arid is urging the young voters to verify that the information on the slip, especially their name and surname, is written the same way as on their identity card.
“All first voters including those who turned 18 this year must go in their electoral area and register. Your name will NOT be automatically added to the voter’s register. You have to go in person and register so that your name can be included on the register,” says a communiqué from Arid.
Arid is also calling on voters who were not allowed to vote in the last election because their names were not on the voter’s register, to go and register in their electoral area as soon as possible so that everyone eligible to vote are included in the electoral register and can exercise their democratic right.
“We urge everyone to register in person and to keep your registration slip. The text and online voters checking system is not fully reliable and you cannot obtain a physical document like your registration or verification slip through this system. DO NOT WAIT until the last minute, do it NOW,” urges Arid in the communiqué.
As for the youths of Ile Perseverance, Arid says until such time that Perseverance is declared an electoral area the youths residing there must go and register at the office of the Electoral Commission (EC) at the National Library in Victoria.
Meanwhile voters of Perseverance who are of voting age are reminded that it is the duty of the Election Commission & the government to ensure that every citizen of Seychelles, regardless of where they reside, must have the right to exercise their civic duty which is enshrined in our Constitution.
“Do not stress yourselves out by wondering where your polling station will be; this is the EC’s duty. Your responsibility as a voter is to ensure that you are registered,” says the communiqué.
Arid is calling on the EC and the government to do their utmost to resolve this weakness in the law before the closure of the voter’s register.
