Le Cardinal Maurice Piat arrive aux Seychelles aujourd’hui pour une visite de cinq jours.

La venue de l’ancien Evêque du diocèse de Port Louis à l’Ile Maurice marque les 125 ans de celui de Port Victoria.

Pendant sa visite, il participera aux nombreuses activités organisées pour marquer l’anniversaire du diocèse. Dimanche, il dirigera la messe de 9 heures à la Cathédrale de l’Immaculée Conception. Il se rendra ensuite à Praslin où il dira également la messe à l’église St. Joseph de Grand Anse, avant de passer quelques heures à La Digue.

Le lendemain lundi, il participera à une rencontre de fidèles à la Domus. Il y fera une présentation sur le thème ‘Vivre l’Esprit miséricordieux’.

Pendant son séjour, la plus haute personnalité religieuse de la région Océan Indien sera également reçue par le président Danny Faure. Il quittera les Seychelles le mardi 28 février.

Maurice Piat a été promu Cardinal en novembre dernier par le Pape François 1 en même temps que 17 autres venant de 11 pays différents. Le Pape avait alors expliqué qu’en choisissant ces cardinaux, il voulait que le Collège des Cardinaux représente l’universalité de l’Eglise. Quant à l’intéressé lui-même, il avait réagi à sa nomination en disant que c’était « une bien grande responsabilité » qui lui était confiée.

« En cette année de la Miséricorde, le Pape a pensé à ceux qui sont à la périphérie de l’Eglise », avait-il sorti.

Ironie du sort, le nouveau Cardinal avait présenté en juillet dernier sa démission au Pape. Ceci, conformément à la procédure établie par l’Eglise qui a arrêté l’âge limite pour la fonction d’un Evêque à 75 ans.

Thinking of former President Mancham this evening  and the forthcoming 125 years of Victoria  diocese came across a Telegraph obituary we will add later - in spite of the fact we cross swords very often working issues - he would remind my person to discipline my thought and what I put in writing - I/we do not need to write a book about my ancestral Catholic faith and the family over these 125 years. The values they brought my person by - as a result my very extended Catholic workings including NGO  for the past near 40 years. « Aller vers les autres et soyez miséricordieux

C’est une Cathédrale de l’Immaculée Conception bien remplie qui par acclamation a acccueilli le Cardinal mauricien Maurice Piat.

Les fidèles se sont ensuite joints à l’Evêque de Port Victoria Denis Wiehe et les prêtres des autres paroisses du diocèse pour la lecture d’un texte de bienvenue. Ils l’ont félicité pour son élévation au rang des cardinaux en novembre dernier, tout en exprimant le bonheur ressenti par sa présence aux Seychelles. Deux jeunes de la paroisse de Victoria lui ont remis des souvenirs, dont un grand tableau qu’il dit il va accrocher à la cure de Port Louis.
