The Electoral Commission(EC) says a number of legal matters need to be addressed in order to improve on the effectiveness of the electoral process to ensure the delivery of true, fair and effective elections in future, as stipulated in article 51 (6) (c) of the Constitution.
The comment comes from the EC’s report on the conduct of the 2018 Anse Boileau by-election which was published this week.
The 14-page report made a series of observations, proposals and recommendations which covered several issues including voting facilities; dispute mechanism; campaign expenditure; code of conduct, Seychelles Media Commission; voter education; voter register; and party liaison.
The report says that the EC should improve training of polling station staff and that the handbook for Electoral officers should be applicable to ensure consistency in the application of all procedures.
Most of the other observations were geared toward the commission itself with the report suggesting that it reviews its structure; clearly define its role and functions; improve its current public image and be more accessible to all political parties and other stakeholders.

New Electoral Commission briefs partners on work plan

The newly appointed Electoral Commission (EC) yesterday morning held its first meeting with key partners and stakeholders to brief them on its work plan, the new way it will carry out its functions and fulfill its responsibilities and its collaboration with different partners.

The meeting which was held at National House was attended by representatives of the different political parties and civil society observer groups.

Hier après-midi, une équipe du quotidien Seychelles NATION est allée faire un tour dans les deux lieux d’inscription désignés pour voir la participation des résidents de Persévérance dans l’exercice d’enregistrement pour une nouvelle liste des électeurs. Malheureusement, à 17 heures, seuls 68 résidents avaient terminé leur enregistrement.
