The ceremony to launch the Virgo II took place yesterday in the presence of the Minister for Natural Resources Peter Sinon; Minister for Education Macsuzy Mondon; chief executive of the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) Finely Racombo; MTC director Swarup Bangara; chairman of the MTC board Conrad Benoiton; as well as MTC students studying for their advanced level certificate in fisheries, navigation and marine mechanics.

Mr Racombo explained that MTC previously had a boat called Virgo I, which was donated by the then Ministry for Fisheries and Agriculture. The VirgoGuests viewing the facilities on board the Virgo II I which was built on La Digue was aimed for artisanal fishing and could only go on trips during the day and return to the harbour by night fall.
It was not conditioned for high seas and wasn’t able to accommodate the students for the majority of their activities.

Thanks to an EU funding, the highly modern and technical Virgo II was able to be constructed and delivered on time, with all the necessary facilities available for the trainees. The total cost of the vessel is US $375,145.

The Virgo II was built in Sri Lanka and was supervised by a technical team headed by Beatty Hoareau.

Since the vessel is highly technical and utmost care is needed to ensure its durability, the SFA will be managing the Virgo II for the next two years.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to that effect was also signed yesterday during the ceremony.

Mr Racombo signed for the SFA while Mr Bangara signed for the MTC.

With the new vessel, students will gain more frequent access to the sea.

Minister Sinon called the introduction of the Virgo II a transition from traditional to semi-industrial fisheries, enabling the students to go out to sea for more than one day.

He also commented on the increase in the number of female maritime students who have had great success in their studies, saying that he wouldn’t be surprised if these girls were to occupy top positions in the future.

The ceremony was followed by blessing of the boat by Father Roger De Commarmond from the Catholic Church and Reverend Daniel Kallee from the Anglican Church.
