HOW THE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARIAT PLOTTED WITH TWO MARXIST MINISTERS IN THE BRITISH FOREIGN OFFICE TO OVERTHROW THE DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED GOVERNMENT LED BY JAMES MANCHAM TO INSTALL RENE AS PRESIDENT ON 5TH JUNE 1977.
The then Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Marxist former Attorney General of Guyana Shridath Ramphal, together with JULIUS NYERERE of Tanzania plotted to prevent Macham from addressing the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference (CHOGM) ON 6th June as he had been invited to do as president and head of Government of the latest member of the Commonwealth, the Republic of Seychelles. In their plot they were assisted by the two junior ministers of the British Foreign Office, Joan Lestor and Judith Hart. The excuse they gave was that if Mancham addressed the heads of government while his government had been overthrown it would embarrass the Queen who would be chairing the conference. Effort by Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta and Mauritius Prime Minister Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam to get Mancham to speak before the conference failed.
On the first anniversary of the coup, 1978, Secretary Ramphal was the distinguished guest at the formal ceremony held in the stadium sitting with Rene. The then British Government, with the two marxist ministers running the foreign office, refused to honor the commitment made by the previous government led by conservative Ted Heath to grant independent Seychelles a £10m soft loan golden handshake to create a new security apparatus which included a new police force when President Mancham asked for it. But soon after the coup the soft loan was duly disbursed. Later Rene refused to countenance any repayment of that loan which forced the British to block all formal loan applications by Seychelles to the EU until the restoration of the multiparty system in 1993. The rest is history.
