Richard III: Leicester welcomes king's remains

King Richard III's remains have arrived at Leicester Cathedral ahead of his reburial.

His funeral cortege entered the city at the historic Bow Bridge after touring landmarks in the county.

Cannons were fired in a salute to the king at Bosworth, where he died in 1485.

His coffin will be on public view at the cathedral from 09:00 GMT on Monday. He will finally be reinterred during a ceremony on Thursday.

Richard's skeleton was found in 2012, in an old friary beneath a car park.

Comment - We just cannot locate the previous threads on this subject the moment the discovery was announced and the many followup issues and the bitter fights over his remains and the scientific issues.

Richard III: skeleton is the king
The body of Richard III, slain at the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, has been found buried deep beneath a Leicester car park, scientists confirmed today.

Archaeologists said DNA testing proved "beyond reasonable doubt" that the skeleton was that of the Plantagenet king.
The University of Leicester team described their find as "truly astonishing".
They said the skeletal evidence "provides a highly convincing case for identification as Richard III". They said that the skeleton was the king as far as all scientific tests could prove.

Finally at rest: Britain's King Richard III buried with pomp, poetry

He will always be known as the king whose bones were discovered beneath a parking lot. But on Thursday, Richard III was given a send-off befitting his regal title.

In a ceremony oozing with British pomp and circumstance, and attended by royals, dignitaries and even a Hollywood star, the city of Leicester finally laid to rest the remains of the last Plantagenet king, 530 years after his death.

The hourlong ceremony marked the culmination of a week of celebration and reflection that many locals have rejoiced for putting Leicester, a city of 330,000 located 100 miles north of London, on the map.
