The Anse A La Mouche development has now been confirmed on National Television by the President that it is happening.
The president mentioned that: 'Preserve Seychelles' was present at the EIA presentation held in the Anse Boileau district administration. Yes, we were, and we said our share loud and clear regarding our stand on the project.
Also present at the meeting were a number of LDS MNAs, a prominent figure in LDS was the moderator for the meeting. (Just as a reminder)
The president failed to mention that he received a letter from us in his capacity as president whereby in it one of the issues mentioned were Anse A la mouche. Those of you who have been following a bit would remember that we met with the new minister for Environment for this very same matter, and up to now he is still to get back to us upon this matter.
It has been said and I repeat again, the EIA procedures were not followed through accordingly. The consultant had a lot of issues raised as well as recommendations by various people and organizations but he never came back for another presentation to receive approval from the people.
The position of 'Preserve Seychelles' on this project remains clear. We will not stand idle and allow catastrophic disaster similar or worse to what happened at Beau-Vallon to happen once again!
We shall have a press release on the subject soon!
Julia Morin
Chairperson of 'Preserve Seychelles'

What does the imaginary English village of Dibley have in common with the real village of Anse La Mouche in Seychelles?
Well they are both picturesque tiny idilic sleepy happy go lucky communities. The kind that urban rat racers dream of escaping to every now and then.
Now imagine a developer walking into Dibley and announcing to the Parish Council that it knows how to make them all prosperous. They need to lease the village to the developer so it can be ripped apart and rebuilt according to a formula that’s been proven across the world to attract tourists.
As part of the deal the developer also gets to carve up his leasehold into residential plots which they can sell as freeholds (yes you read that right) on the international market.
Now the villagers should not expect to get rich simply by leasing of the land, because it’s just a nominal sum of 4.5 million (although each of the scores of residential freehold plots will probably command a million!).
No, instead the villagers can become quite prosperous by cramming into staff quarters and working hard in low paid shifts to create the illusion of a picturesquely idyllic laid back resort experience for paying guests.
Well you can imagine the response this proposal would receive from Geraldine Granger the erstwhile Vicar Of Dibley!
AND YET...
This is exactly what the Royal Development Company of the United Arab Emirates intends to do to that other little costal village on the main island of Mahe in the #Seychelles.
One of the last remaining truely islander experiences on the main island, its calm and quaint beachfront high street will be diverted inland as a sterile access road. This street, which is a natural lounging area for the community as a whole, will be absorbed into the hotel resort.
And to cap it one of the last remaining vital wetlands will be built onto, disregarding the growing impact we face from the global environmental crisis!
The developer promises to allow public access to the beachfront street and the beach. But this is the same developer (for all practical purposes) that developed a Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts property on a similar format just slightly up the road. And heavy handed security have succeeded in making it a very unwelcoming and hostile environment for all but the Elite of the local community.
SO...
Of course there’s a petition to stop this travesty and reformulate a sustainable tourism project that integrates with the existing culture, heritage, community, economy and landscape.
A legal challenge is also being considered.
Please sign the petition and give us some support to preserve a little bit of our natural and social heritage, which quite frankly doesn’t need artificial improvements to make it a compelling proposition for your next holiday! We are not building from scratch in a desert.
