UniSey hires Belgian star professor to boost its growth

Dr Caers (36), PhD in Applied Economic Sciences, until recently worked as an assistant professor in Human Resource Management (HR) for the renowned Catholic University of Leuven, number 71 in the QS World University Ranking. He published over 20 articles in important scientific journals, two popular handbooks in HR (used in more than 10 institutions of higher education) and was repeatedly awarded for excellent teaching by his university.
Moreover, he appeared weekly in Belgian newspaper interviews and occasional television interviews and is the author of his own column in the most respected Belgian magazine for HR-professionals.
Having done many seminars for the business sector and working on projects with companies for years, he seems just as much a scientist as he is a business professional.
Now, he is in our country working as a senior lecturer for UniSey.
“It’s great to be back,” Dr Caers says. Having been to Seychelles in 2013 and 2016, it is now his third time in our country.
“And this time, I’m here to stay,” he says.
He makes it clear that he does not consider himself an expat but rather an immigrant willing to build a new life in Seychelles, helping the country to prosper over the next decennia.
“I joined UniSey because this country felt like a new home from the first time my wife and I came on holiday here, and I strongly believe in the university’s ability to thrive as a knowledge hub in the Indian Ocean. There are so many extraordinary people here and the past eight years have established strong foundations for the future growth of the university. I’m honored to be part of that,” says Dr Caers.
Dr Caers has a clear view on the future of UniSey, which he describes as threefold. His first aim is to teach students in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme.
“I think it’s highly important to teach our students the most recent techniques in HR and in management science, so that they can apply them in our local businesses when they graduate. It is also important that they learn to act based on scientific knowledge and not only assumptions or popular ideas, which will improve their careers as managers and the jobs of their subordinates. I’m not only going to teach them the science, but also the reality of today’s business and current practices, so that they are well prepared when they start to work”.
The second aim of Dr Caers’ objectives is to increase the number of research projects and academic publications.
“It is important for every university to contribute to the global academic work. It is our way of shaping the world and make it a better one, and to open up our knowledge to the rest of the world. Collaboration on research projects by UniSey professors and lecturers and internal sharing of knowledge, will make us all even better in what we do and strengthen the courses that we teach. Moreover, more scientific publications will allow the university to present itself better to the international public, attracting more high quality professors and also more international students. It can stimulate a positive spiral and help the university to grow quickly and strategically”.
All of this is fine, but what do the Seychellois get from that, besides good education?
“That is the third aim of my master plan,” explains Dr Caers. “Like I was already doing in Belgium, I will try to bring UniSey even closer to the business world and share its knowledge with the local entrepreneurs through seminars and courses for business professionals. If tax and business funds are used to have a university, it is our duty to give a lot back to society. I hereby do not aim to focus on business professionals only, but on every single Seychellois. Because if you’re employed or want to be employed in the near future, the university can teach you a lot about healthy life style, job crafting, stress reduction programmes, etc. It will also be an aim to have the UniSey lecturers and professors become more active in the public debate, providing clarification on news facts that concern the public and to help solve current issues that hamper our society. Also that way, we can be of service to the public. I hope UniSey will be a strong knowledge hub in the Indian Ocean, open for the Seychellois people and for the entire world.”

Comment - The debacle of those mobile office in Kent, work space and Sechelles Heritage Trust  and this News. Only two days ago Mr Tall in his publication wrote that  Seychelles economy is grounding to a halt and his views why.

The world is so bloody dishonest  and the killing of that Journalist in Malta - meaning look at the National Assembly scandal  and the many years of Bogus publications by the government and officials.  That SIROP- program - out there in the big world the many Professors who have come to read and know about that SIROP program and under president  J A Michel his so call economic miracle and what was really driving those economic miracle  - the need to differentiate between theory and Practice in Economic management.

We would have like to test his steel with that SIROP program and many other High Management thematic in regard to Seychelles workings that University and the Indian Ocean.

Somebody need/must point to him the Terror incidents in  Belgium the past 3 years what was driving those issues and yet the media , police and European Union institutions he ought to start researching and studying the phenomena and write a paper on in they were/are linked to Seychelles economic/diplomatic and regional workings and Africa, Gulf Region, Asia. Or is this another Blunderbuss coming to Seychelles , crap the imbeciles and then promote that he is a super star.

UniSey graduation - 64 get their degrees

A group of 64 under and post-graduate students from the University of Seychelles (UniSey) for the year 2017 graduated yesterday afternoon.
It was the vice-chancellor of UniSey, Professor Denis Hardy, who presented the students with their degree and masters certificates in a ceremony held at the university’s auditorium at Anse Royale.
Present were the chancellor of UniSey, former President of the Republic of Seychelles, James Michel; the Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Joel Morgan; the Commissioner of Police Kishnan Labonte; members of the diplomatic corps; UniSey council members; registrar; principal secretaries; parents; among other invitees.
The ceremony, which kicked off with a blessing by Reverend Christine Benoit, was also punctuated by musical intervals by the National Choir.
Six students excelled as best performers in their respective field of study and they were rewarded for their achievements. They are Gibran Rizvi (Bachelor of Science in Computing and Information Systems), Ketlynn Marie (Bachelor of Law), Thessia Kilindo (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with International Business), Keith Mondon (Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance), Sabina Henriette (Association of Chartered Certified Accountant - ACCA Affiliate) and Doreen Zelia (Master of Public Administration).
Rizvi, Kilindo and Mondon also received a masters scholarship sponsored by the government of Seychelles through the Agency for National Human Resource Development (ANHRD).
This year UniSey has introduced a new faculty dean award. The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Development award went to Gibran Rizvi, the Dean of the Faculty for Business and Sustainable Development award went to Keith Mondon while Marie-André Sally won the Dean of the Faculty for Business and Professional Development award.
During the ceremony three entrepreneurs were honoured for their profound contributions towards education and enterprises to the improvement of the quality of life of our nation. Construction businessman Vijay Patel, sales businessman Basil Soundy and pharmacist Behramsha Udwedia were honoured with UniSey’s Doctorate Honorary Award. It was the chairperson of UniSey Council Margaret Pillay who honoured the three businessmen.
Prof. Hardy said that UniSey had gone a long way and achieved a lot since its conception in 2007 with the first batch of students entering the university in 2009.
He said that the university has worked very hard so that certificates obtained from the university has valued reputation.
He noted that the university is now firstly a symbolic institution in the Seychelles and is living up to the expectations of the people.
“The second function of the university is to drive forward the economy and to help the society to reach new levels. It has always been our priority to provide the skills so that the economy becomes a knowledge based economy,” he said.
He said that UniSey is part of the community and is learning a lot from the society.
He praised the graduates for the efforts they have put in to achieve their goals and he stated it was not so easy for those who had to study while still at work.
“I think we have come a long way. We have passed a number of landmarks. We wouldn’t have been able to do this on our own without the help of many people,” he said as the thanked the chancellor and all who have contributed to those achievements.
Prof. Hardy also shared his dream on how UniSey has to look by the year 2030 starting with the turning of the existing site to a new high tech university with accommodation for 2000 local and foreign students thus attaining the vision of being the hub for learning in the Indian Ocean.
Best performer in Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance and also the Dean of Faculty for Business and Sustainable Development awardee, Keith Mondon, who will also be seeking for a further diploma to develop in his investment operation career, said: “After three years of hard work, I am very proud of my achievement and I am very happy that my family is with me to share my happiness.”
Doreen Zelia, best performer in Master of Public Administration and who works with the Agency for the Prevention of Drugs and Alcohol Abuse in the President’s Office, said: “It’s been two tough difficult years since 2015. I had to stay focused, with lots of sacrifices, waking up early in the morning to study and with work plus home commitments, it played down on me and I am very happy with my achievement.”

UniSey appoints new vice-chancellor


Dr Justin Valentin has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of the University of Seychelles (UniSey).
He will take up the post on January 1, 2018.
Dr Valentin joined UniSey in 2013 and is presently Dean of the Faculty of Business & Sustainable Development. He has been closely involved in the development of the university during this period and, as well as his Faculty role, he has overall responsibility for the university’s Research and Internationalisation.
In the course of gaining his academic qualifications, he attended universities in Australia, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. Following research at King’s College London, he obtained his PhD in his specialist field of Mathematics Education.
Dr Valentin is well known as a leading educationalist in Seychelles. Prior to joining UniSey he undertook research in the Ministry of Education. More recently, he has chaired or otherwise participated in a number of important committees and governing bodies.
This wide range of experience will be important to the further development of UniSey and the closer alignment of the university to government priorities. He brings to the post a strong sense of commitment to the role of higher education at a time when Seychelles is working towards the fulfilment of a knowledge economy.
Dr Valentin will be the university’s fourth vice-chancellor, following in the steps of Professor Rolph Payet (the Founding V-C), Marina Confait, and Professor Dennis Hardy.
His appointment represents the outcome of an intensive selection process conducted by a sub-committee of the University Council and endorsed by the chancellor, former President James Michel.
Reflecting on the process, the chair of the Council, Margaret Pillay, affirmed her belief that this is the right decision for the university:
“Dr Valentin combines a deep understanding of Seychelles society and of the national university with the energy and ideas to innovate. He will build on the university’s achievements to date and will bring valuable change where it is needed.”
Meanwhile the UniSey is now closed for the Christmas vacation. It will re-open on January 8, 2018.

Students not eager to study at Unisey
Students who scored 12 to 17 points are being offered courses at the University of Seychelles (Unisey) by the government of Seychelles; however, students displayed little interest in joining the Unisey Campus after a meeting held on Tuesday 13 February by the Agency for National Human Resources Development (ANHRD) at the Site auditorium, Mont Fleuri.

As was the case for students who scored 18 points and above, on Tuesday 13 February, the ANHRD met with students who scored 12 to 17 points in their final AS and A Level examinations from the School of Advanced Level Studies (SALS) and the Independent and International schools. The meeting was intended to facilitate discussions on scholarships. These students, who have scored 12 to 17 points, have not qualified for a fully-funded scholarship by the government of Seychelles in order to go study abroad but are being offered scholarships at the Unisey.
Representatives of Unisey were present at the meeting to discuss with the students the requirements needed to enroll at Unisey and how to go about it as well as to discuss the different courses on offer. During the presentation by a Unisey representative, the question of who would like to join Unisey popped up but it could be observed that during the session, not much interest to join the Unisey was shown on behalf of the students who were present – reason as to why this is the case, is rather unclear.
The Unisey offers courses in diverse fields of studies such as law, environmental science, business and marketing to name a few and many of these courses are endorsed by the University of London (UoL), but still, the matter did not seem to gather the attention of the students who were present at the meeting.
In an interview with TODAY last week, the new Vice-Chancellor for the University of Seychelles, Dr. Justin Valentin said that Unisey accepts students with 12 points and above for A Levels examinations to study at the university but if it happens that the government raises the point marks to 14 or 16, then the university is going to have to look for alternative ways to support the students who come to Unisey.
For those who wish to pursue their studies abroad but have not met the 18 points and above requirement,they have to keep in mind that half of their tuition will be paid by them as they are not covered for a fully-funded Government of Seychelles (GOS) scholarship. The deadline for the students to hand in their application forms is the 28 February.
On another note, a student told TODAY that many students and parents are upset and have some serious concerns in regards to the teaching phase which the students have to go through – which is part of their scholarship agreement. Students have in the past said that they have no proper training in the teaching field and they should therefore not be sent to a class to teach alone without the presence of a qualified teacher.

Sir James Mancham research institute to hold public lecture on Somalia

The Sir James Mancham Peace and Diplomacy Research Institute of the University of Seychelles are organising a public lecture entitled ‘Who cares about Somalia’ on Thursday May 17 at 4.30pm at The Station, Sans Souci.
Everyone in Seychelles has heard of Somalia, often because of the pirates who have caused so many problems for local shipping. Little good news has come from that country in recent years, which has earned the unenviable tag of a failed state.
Occupying the Horn of Africa, it is riven by conflict between opposing warlords and terrorist groups. Most of the land is barren and peopled by nomadic herdsmen, and there is no tradition of democratic government.
But does it always have to be like this?
Can Somalia one day be a good neighbour in the region and part of the international community?
People do care about its future even though there are no easy solutions.
Each of the three discussion leaders is an expert in different aspects of this subject. British High Commissioner Caron Röhsler will tell of efforts by the international community to bring together the various factions; Superintendent of the Prison Service, Raymond St Ange, will share his personal experience of dealing with Somalian pirates, asking why they choose to do this; and Associate Professor Ashton Berry will turn our attention to Somalia’s 3,000-kilometre coastline as a largely untapped economic opportunity.
The public lecture will offer a relaxing environment for an open exchange of discussions and views.

UniSey to start offering training in journalism

The Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation and the University of Seychelles (UniSey) have signed an agreement for the university to train journalists and other media enthusiasts.
The agreement was signed by SBC’s chief executive Berard Dupres and the vice-chancellor of UniSey Dr Justin Valentin at the SBC boardroom at Hermitage.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Mr Dupres said there are not enough qualified journalists in the country and it is therefore important that journalists receive appropriate training.
The agreement will also include a training module for other media related enthusiasts who want to begin a career in broadcasting such as soundmen, lightsmen and cameramen.
Mr Dupres said that journalism is changing and developing and here is an opportunity for aspiring journalists to get a professional qualification in journalism.
“There is a rising competition between radio and television thus it makes it a necessity for us all to upgrade our knowledge in this field. As it is said that the media is the fourth pillar of our democracy, for it to be able to emancipate and support this democracy there is a need for human resources to be made available,” Mr Dupres said.
He added that eventually long-serving staff who will be retiring will have to be replaced but these same people who are already in the profession have contributed a lot towards broadcasting and the new recruits can also learn from those already in employment so as to gain knowledge and experience,” said Mr Dupres.
For his part, Dr Valentin said the journalism training course will begin at diploma level and is expected to start in September this year.
“The agreement signed today enables the diploma course in journalism to be concurrently run by UniSey and SBC. It is a course which has been developed at the demand of media societies in Seychelles and where formalities have been followed and approved by the Seychelles Qualifications Authority (SQA) criteria,” Dr Valentin said.
The journalism course is not restricted to participants from SBC and is also open to all those who would like to develop a career in journalism.

UniSey graduate attributes academic success to voluntary work

On November 15, 2018, Jellissa Julie, a 24-year-old Seychellois, graduated with a business degree from the University of Seychelles (UniSey) after successfully completing a long-distance course offered by the Royal Holloway University of London. The graduation ceremony was held at The Barbican Centre on March 5.

She attributes her success largely to her active involvement with the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) where she dedicates time to doing voluntary work.
