James Michel
1h ·
Recently I tendered my resignation as Chancellor of the University of Seychelles, which was accepted by the Council, and I have officially stepped down from this position.
Many of us will recall the humble beginnings of this institution. When I set out to create the University of Seychelles, together with a core of like-minded individuals who believed in the same vision, some say that it could not be done. Seychelles is too small and does not need a university, they said! But we persevered, despite all odds, and UNISEY opened its doors to its first cohort of students on 17 September 2009. As its founder, I became its first Chancellor, a position that I have held until today.
And I have watched it grow, with pride, and transform itself into a hub of learning – and a hub of excellence in the region and beyond. UNISEY is probably one of the youngest universities in the world, but it is rapidly gaining an international reputation for the quality of its teaching staff, for the assiduousness of its students and its affiliation with older and more renowned institutions of higher learning globally.
From 2009 to 2019, the University enrolled a little over 2000 students; of those, more than 1500 graduated. All, if not most of them, have found their niche in the world of work and contributing to the development of Seychelles. These are the Young Leaders that we set out to train, to equip with a sound knowledge base and skills, and the intellectual capabilities that our country needs. They are the future leaders of Seychelles and I have every confidence in them.
The achievements of UNISEY are many and varied. They would not have been possible without the support of the Vice-Chancellors, without the support of the teaching staff and the students themselves. I am grateful to all of them and thank them all.
UNISEY has the potential to be an even greater transformative source for a knowledge-based economy in our society, including expanding its global reach. Many challenges lie ahead and need to be addressed. But these are best left to my successor. After nearly 12 years at the helm of the University of Seychelles, I felt that the time had come for a new leadership team to take over, to build on our past achievements and successes, and steer this to yet greater heights.
It has been an honour and privilege to lead UNISEY over the past decade and to have worked with men and women of great passion and dedication. Together, we have achieved much, yet much more remains to be done. I wish my successor every success in the tasks and responsibilities which lie ahead, and assurances of my support.
I wish to thank all those of you who have accompanied me from the beginning of the University of Seychelles and wish them good luck and success in the future.
Today we saw the inauguration of Unisey’s 5th Vice Chancellor. I wish her success in taking our highest learning institution -UNISEY - to greater heights of achievements.
